Symposium Proceedings

SymposiumThe symposium was launched in 2002 by Jean Lelièvre who had the idea of organizing a panel discussion/forum with guest speakers, including photojournalists, philosophers, sociologists, academics, researchers, and historians, both French and international, i.e. a wide range of panelists interested in current affairs and pictures, but approaching news and these questions from very different angles. The discussion has regularly produced statements not generally heard amongst professional photographers, but that's the purpose of the exercise! “Have we reached a crisis point in communication, a crisis with the symbols we produce, and in a broader sense, in conveying and grasping meaning in today's increasingly commoditized world?” This question captures the essence of the debate over the years.

The proceedings of the symposium (in eight booklets) contain the full text of the debates since 2002. They are on sale throughout the Festival, at the Chapitre bookshopLa Poudrière, from August 31 to September 15, 2013, (10 euros per volume).
Outside festival dates, e-mail orders to: d.lelu@wanadoo.fr.

Symposium proceedings available in French only.

War is personal

Eugene Richards In 2009, the exhibition by Eugene Richards drew a great deal of attention and unanimous praise. Not a single publishing house was interested in it. Eugene therefore decided to publish it himself, with support from his agency, Getty Images, the University of Texas, and the Festival Visa pour l'Image.

Zmâla 4

Zmâla 4 Zmâla is an independent review dedicated to the production of photographers' collectives in France and abroad. We have undertaken to unit part of this large family, this Zmâla, so as to give more visibility to budding collectives and defend those whose fame is already established. It is our job of messenger, about which we feel very strongly.
