House prices

Many of us were told that house prices are so high because there’s too many people and not enough houses. The reality is that house prices were pushed up by the hundreds of billions of pounds that banks created in the years before the financial crisis.

Debt

Most of the money in the UK is created by banks when they make loans. That means that the only way to get money into the economy is to borrow it from banks, leaving us all trapped under a mountain of debt.

Inequality

Because almost all of our money is ‘on loan’ from the banks, someone has to pay interest on nearly every pound in the UK. This interest redistributes money from the bottom 90% of the population to the top 10%.

Recessions & Crisis

The financial crisis happened because banks were able to create too much money, too quickly, and used it to push up house prices and speculate on financial markets.
