Faxton Hospital History Faxton Hospital evolved from the union of two facilities, Children’s Hospital and Rehabilitation Center (an outgrowth of the old Utica Orphan Asylum on Genesee Street, established in 1830), and Faxton Hospital, established by Theodore S. Faxton on Sunset Avenue in 1875. Faxton Hospital came into being on January 1, 1989 when Faxton Hospital and Children’s Hospital merged.
St. Luke’s-Memorial Hospital History St. Luke’s-Memorial traces its roots back to the original St. Luke’s Home, established in 1869, and the Utica Homeopathic Hospital (later known as Utica Memorial Hospital) established in 1895. In 1949, the two hospitals merged and in 1957, St. Luke’s-Memorial Hospital Center opened at its current location on Champlin Avenue in New Hartford.
In 1992, Faxton Hospital and St. Luke’s-Memorial Hospital Center formed the Mohawk Valley Network (MVN), a cooperative affiliation designed to eliminate unnecessary duplication of services and provide a vehicle by which high quality healthcare would be convenient and accessible. In 1997 the Board of Directors of the two hospitals combined into one common board, and in 1998 the management of both organizations consolidated into one management group. The hospitals combined their Foundations into one organization effective January 1999. The hospitals consolidated into one healthcare system on January 1, 2000.
