FC Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder has been one of the main characters featured in the European Football Yearbook 2012/13 - an impressive sized book dedicated to the current edition of European competitions and beyond.

In their print work, our colleagues summed up the last year, mentioning the EURO 2012 highlights, published extensive data on all 53 of UEFA member countries and much more.

A separate and, perhaps, the most interesting section of the book is devoted to the top one hundred players whose 2011/12 performance at club and international level impressed the UEFA yearbook writers the most. Armenia proved beyond doubt that they can no longer be considered among the also-rans of European international football with a brilliant conclusion to their UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying campaign. Three successive high-scoring victories – including a remarkable 4-0 win in Slovakia – catapulted the team into contention for a play-off place, and the inspirational figure behind that unexpected challenge was Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The young FC Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder scored in all three of those big wins plus the 2-1 defeat to the Republic of Ireland in Dublin that eventually ended the team’s qualifying hopes. While Shakhtar struggled in Europe, they were dominant again at home, and Mkhitaryan was highly instrumental in helping the club to retain both the Ukrainian Premier-Liha title and the Ukrainian Cup. Extremely popular with the locals in the Donbass Arena, the talented 23-year-old scored ten league goals plus the winner in a tight cup quarter-final against FC Metalurh Zaporizhya.
