HUME, ETHEL DOUGLAS, Bechamp or Pasteur? A Lost Chapter in the History of Biology.
By E. Douglas Hume. Founded upon MS. by Montagu R. Leverson ... Foreword by S. Judd Lewis. Chicago: Covici-McGee, 1923. 1st Edition, printed in the USA. viii+296pp. + inserted portrait of Bechamp. 12mo. Straight-grained red cloth with black spine & front printing. Crown frayed, front hinge cracked, old bookseller's and owner's name stamps to the front endpapers, a good to VG copy. The first book in English to attempt to resurrect Bechamp's reputation as a biologist equal or greater to Pasteur in importance. A French chemist who first synthesized Atoxyl in 1859, Pierre Jacques Antoine Bechamp (1816-1908) developed a pleomorphic theory that posited bacteria to result from disease rather than causing it. He held that scavenging bacteria arise from microorganisms that he held to be present normally in matter, including live tissue, and that he believed fed on necrotic cells. Weight: 1 pound 2.0 ounces = 512 grams. Size: 8.0 x 5.6 x 0.8 inches = 20 x 14 x 2cm. Binding: HB.
