Crews arrived in Kittanning on Wednesday morning to upright several overturned rail cars that derailed in Applewold and North Buffalo Township on Tuesday.

The train was in route from the electric power generating station in Reesedale to Freeport. Rail cars had been emptied of coal at Reesedale and were returning to Freeport at the time of the derailment.

The “storm team” emergency rail workers from the RJ Corman Derailment team in Nicholas, Kentucky arrived yesterday morning. The storm team specializes in responding to derailments nationwide. Their task included re-railing cars and repairing wheels to make them ready for rail transportation again.

An unidentified spokesperson for Corman said there is an investigation in progress as to the events that led to the derailment.

Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad’s corporate headquarters, Genesee and Wyoming Incorporated, did not respond to a request for an interview.
