The smartphone market hasn’t yet peaked – but Samsung might have

By about 7 mins ago.

Samsung and Apple are two of the biggest companies in the world. Despite pulling in huge profits on massive revenues, both companies have seen their stock prices fall in the past year. Some analysts have argued that the high-end smartphone market may have peaked, claiming that Apple and Samsung must develop new technologies to entice consumers to buy their products. Apple is rumored to be developing a smartwatch, and Samsung has even confirmed a similar device will be heading to the market in the future. There is one problem, however — the smartphone market hasn’t peaked. More →

Windows 8.1 looks to follow Android’s playbook for tracking users

Samsung apes Microsoft’s strategy, throws money at developers for Tizen apps

The market hasn’t exactly been kind to operating systems that aren’t iOS or Android, which is why Microsoft has been smartly offering app developers large sums of cash to create apps for its Windows Phone 8 platform. Now CNET reports that Samsung is pursuing a similar strategy when it comes to Tizen, the new operating system that the company is developing to hedge its investments in Google’s Android operating system. Specifically, CNET says that Samsung is teaming with Intel to hold a Tizen app development challenge that will give as much as $200,000 in prize money to individual developers and a grand total of $4 million in prize money. Developers must submit their apps by November 1st and winners will be announced in December.

Galaxy S4, HTC One ‘Google Editions’ now shipping

Android users who like their mobile OS plain are in for a treat. AndroidCentral reports that Google has started shipping the “Google Editions” of the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One that bring the stock Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean experience to the latest flagship phones from both Samsung and HTC. The Google Edition of the HTC One is selling for $599.99 while the pure Google Galaxy S4 costs $649.99, and neither phone requires a service contract. Google has started releasing versions of popular smartphones with stock Android as a way to give users more options to buy smartphones off-contract and without all the added features that manufacturers normally load onto their devices.

Windows Phone makes big splash in Russia as largest carrier drops iPhone

Windows Phone 8 may not be making a dent in its home country but it seems to be making plenty of comrades in other parts of the world. Video: Rockstar unleashes first Grand Theft Auto V gameplay trailer

The current generation of consoles is coming to a close but Rockstar Games is looking to send the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 out with a bang. The game developer on Tuesday released its first gameplay trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, the latest installment of its hugely popular franchise that lets gamers behave as immorally as they please in an open world setting that bears a striking resemblance to contemporary Los Angeles. The trailer shows off the shooting and driving mechanics that GTA players have long enjoyed and also shows a wide variety of activities that don’t involve criminal mayhem, including golfing, scuba diving and skydiving. Or put another way, it looks as though GTA V will be able to simulate a dream vacation as well as the perfect crime spree. The full very-not-safe-for-work video follows below. More →

Apple’s iPhone 5S to reportedly swipe Galaxy S4′s 120fps slow-motion video feature

Apple is expected to debut a new iPhone in September that will likely look similar to Apple’s current-generation smartphone and be equipped with improved internal hardware such as a faster processor and better camera. According to 9to5Mac, the iPhone 5S may also include a new camera feature known as “Mogul” mode. The feature, which was spotted in the iOS 7 beta, reportedly enables the iPhone to capture crisp and clean videos at 120 frames-per-second and will also allow for a slow-motion option. Interestingly enough, the iPhone’s closets competitor, the Galaxy S4, already has a slow-motion feature and the ability to record video at 120 frames-per-second.

Can BlackBerry drum up new business with old software? BlackBerry 9720 photos leak

BlackBerry confirmed on the earnings call following its dismal fiscal first-quarter report that despite the launch of its new BlackBerry 10 platform, it still has plans to release a new phone powered by the old BlackBerry 7 operating system. Since the company has yet to address the all-too-important budget price range with its new BB10 software, the curious move at least made some sense — while logic might dictate that BlackBerry should put all of its resources into BB10, a new BB7 phone might help stop low-end Android phones and Nokia’s Asha lineup from crushing BlackBerry sales in emerging markets. Unfortunately, BlackBerry’s upcoming BB7-powered smartphone, the BlackBerry 9270, appears to be a mid-range handset rather than a dirt-cheap budget phone, so it will seemingly compete with BlackBerry’s own Q5 smartphone as opposed to entry-level offerings from rivals. Several leaked photos of the upcoming BlackBerry 9270 published by the blog Thai BlackBerry Club follow below. More →

Apple Amazon App Store Lawsuit

Apple and Amazon agree to drop ‘app store’ lawsuit

Apple and Amazon have agreed to end their trademark dispute over the right to use the term “app store.” U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton on Tuesday ordered that the entire case be dismissed at the request of both companies. Reuters reported that the dismissal came after Apple and Amazon agreed not to sue or file counterclaims against each other. Apple filed the original complaint last year against Amazon, claiming the company’s “Amazon Appstore” infringed upon its trademark. Amazon argued that the term “app store” is generic and Apple’s claims were baseless. The case was partially dismissed earlier this year when a judge ruled that Apple could not bring a false advertising claim against Amazon.

Microsoft has lost $11 billion trying to compete with Google

We’ve known for a while that Microsoft hasn’t been very successful in its attempt to make a Bing a legitimate rival to Google but it seems the company’s willingness to lose money while propping up its online services is even deeper than we’d imagined. Business Insider’s Jay Yarow reports that Microsoft’s Online Services Division, which incorporates Bing, MSN and other web properties, has lost a whopping $10.9 billion since 2005. Yarow also notes that “there’s probably never been another company in history that has lost that much money online” while doggedly sticking by its offerings. But given that Microsoft is still a very profitable company, it is likely perfectly happy to take losses on Bing as long as it acts as a check on Google’s web dominance.

Video: Samsung shows off prototype for color-changing, foldable smartphone

One of the good things about Samsung’s “try anything” approach to designing smartphones is that it encourages the company’s engineers to think way, way outside the box. AllThingsD reports that Samsung this week showed off a prototype for a new smartphone that features two fold-out panels and that can change colors depending on the mode it’s in. The prototype phone, which Samsung unveiled at MobileBeat 2013 on Tuesday, is also able to use a disposable patch sensor to take a user’s health readings that it can then send to a physician. The full video of Samsung’s wildly experimental smartphone prototype follows below. More →
