Fresh Cream is the debut studio album by British supergroup Cream. It was the first LP release of producer Robert Stigwood’s new “Independent” Reaction Records label, released in the UK as both a mono and stereo version on 9 December 1966, the same time as the single release of “I Feel Free”. The album was released a month later, in January 1967, in the United States by Atco Records as both a mono and a stereo version.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 101 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Fresh Cream represents so many different firsts, it’s difficult to keep count. Cream, of course, was the first supergroup, but their first album not only gave birth to the power trio, it also was instrumental in the birth of heavy metal and the birth of jam rock. That’s a lot of weight for one record and, like a lot of pioneering records, Fresh Cream doesn’t seem quite as mighty as what would come later, both from the group and its acolytes.

For any of you complaining about the panning, the album was recorded on a 4-track and engineers at the time did not have the magic of reduction mixing to help them, for that would be a later invention. Yeah, it's annoying, but the music is great.

The panning might annoy some. But i've become quite used to it and it doesn't really bother me that much anymore. @jsnruf: if you are referring to the 2CD Japan reissue of 2013 (3 versions: Platinum, SHM and SACD), it's not 100% clear if the whole 'second side' of the mono disk is the true mono mix. Side 2 of the mono album master was lost, I believe, and to this day there has been no official statement that it was retrieved. So there has been a lot of doubt and discussion on some boards as to what is the source. Nonetheless, the Japan reissue is a must have. Not only for the beautiful artwork (mini LP replicas), but it's also mastered very nice in a not maximized, compressed way but with a lot of life and dynamic to it. Enjoy!

I agree with Party though the songs on here are great the production are annoying as hell. The drums really seem to the rhythm guitar and drums really seem to lose their power with the crappy sepperation.

Jay: Actually, what annoys me is that it's not great separation, most of the time (*cough*IFeelFreeCat'sSquirrel*cough*) it's "bundle every instrument on the right and then toss the tambourine/harmonica/whatever on the left". It just sounds crappy on headphones like that.

The DCC CD mastered by Steve Hoffman kicks so much ass. And sometimes the panning can be tedious, but I like it a lot. Clear lively instruments, with great separation (duh). I like that.

Actually, yeah, I think I'd prefer a mono version of this, the panning's just too annoying. And this is coming from a guy who thinks people who say "You haven't heard Sgt. Pepper until you heard it in mono" should shut up...

Production's a bit annoying what with the excessive panning, but still a great debut.

I think when listening to this album you've got to understand what other bands where doing at the time. 1966 plus it was recorded very quickly, I think it was one of the first British albums made in stereo.
