Couple Completes Real Life Skyrim Quest, Names Baby Dovahkiin, Gets Free Bethesda Games For Life

A couple has risen to a challenge set by Bethesda in February and named their child Dovahkiin.

Megan and Eric Kellermeyer gave birth to Dovahkiin Tom Kellermeyer last Friday at 6:08 pm PST. Judging from the picture, he’s already been spending too much time out in Skyrim’s snow with a red face like that.

The reward? Free Bethesda games for life. Doesn’t seem much when you consider that Skyrim will pretty much last until the end of time, but in any case well done to them. Still, it’s a bit weird naming a child to get free stuff isn’t it? Even if you liked the name the fact that the free stuff exists kind of makes it a bit shallow, I think. Still I’m not a parent so feel free to discard my views as you see fit.

Ah yes, everyone seems to think we did this because of “free stuff”, and it really wasn’t the case. We love the name, the way it sounds, and what it stands for. We wanted to do something very special for our son, and if you can point out any logical difference between naming our son Dovahkiin, and someone else naming their son “Clint”, “Luke”, or “Elvis” after people or stories they admire, I’d love to hear it. We gave him a nice normal middle name so he can choose which he’d like to go by, but I know that later in life he’s really going to appreciate the name. It wasn’t about the free games at all, I make more than enough money to buy whatever games I want, it was about honoring a company, and lore, that both my wife and I absolutely love.

  Not to bash but, you can say you named him Dovahkiin because you like it (only you know if that is true or not). But really posting a picture of your son with two copies of the game on ether side of him doesn’t help.

The name is beautiful. I have three kids, and named my son Brandon after Brandon Lee. We have a similar love for martial arts. I knew it was not the games before reading your comment.

  I personally bear the name Brandon proudly. I don’t know why people make such a large fuss about names in the first place – if the wearer doesn’t like it, he can change it one day. Even then, I quite like the name Dovahkiin, and can’t understand why some people think it’s better to name their baby “Bob”, “Joe” or “Mary” – very generic but known names – while giving them a more or less unique one is unacceptable.

It may sound nice as a name. But honestly I can’t imagine what will happen when people will ask him:

“Cool name! Is it viking?”

“Nope, it’s nerdish”

The only real logical difference is Dovahkiin isn’t a real person, it’s probably more for attention in much the same way a couple might name a child Odin or Zeus…

Still, if dragons awaken in 2012 at least we’ll have a 1 year old saviour with his “Goo-Goo” and “Babba Dadda” Thu’ums to save the day. :)

People are allowed to name their children whatever they want. I come from an Australian family and neither me my brother or my sister have “normal” names. He has said he didn’t do it for the free games and even if he did, who gives a fuck? It is a pretty awesome name I have to say and I would be proud to have it. So everyone calm your shit, if you don’t like it then don’t do it!!
