The Matched-Index-of-Refraction (MIR) Flow Facility is the largest such facility in the world. The innovative advantage of this system is its large size which provides for improved temporal and spatial resolution over smaller systems and the index of refraction for models fabricated from fused quartz and the flow medium of light mineral oil can be matched for specific laser wavelengths precisely at moderate temperatures in the vicinity of 23°C - 26°C. The combination of its large size and the use of optical measurement techniques such as laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) with precise refractive index matching provides for accurate velocity field measurements in and around very complicated geometric models.
