See the chilling trailer for 'Night Film' by Marisha Pessl -- EXCLUSIVE

Night-Film.jpg

Usually when we call book trailers “cinematic,” we’re being generous. But the trailer for Marisha Pessl‘s upcoming genre-bending thriller Night Film (Aug. 20) really may be the slickest book trailer we’ve seen in a while.

And the novel, if you can even call it that (I prefer “multimedia experience”), warrants the big-budget ramp-up. It begins when the daughter of a reclusive horror film director Stanislav Cordova is found dead, and fallen journalist Scott McGrath falls into the maddening wormhole of trying to uncover the truth behind the girl’s murder. Night Film gets darker and more twisted the deeper McGrath ventures into Cordova’s world—the man hasn’t been seen in public in 30 years, and his films are so horrifying that it’s believed the person who created them must be seriously disturbed as well. Pessl, author of Special Topics in Calamity Physics, includes artifacts and case evidence, like authentic-looking screenshots, police documents, and transcripts, into the maze-like narrative, and in a meta twist, the promotion for Night Film assumes Cordova’s world is real. The trailer below, produced by ApKMedia, is just the first taste.

'The Fifth Beatle': Brian Epstein gets his moment in new graphic novel -- EXCLUSIVE

The Fab Four wouldn’t have been the Fab Four without the genius of the man Paul McCartney called the “fifth Beatle” — Brian Epstein. Epstein discovered the Beatles and guided them through their path to fame with a mix of marketing madness, business savvy, and inspiration. He died at age 32, just as the band was seeing the height of their success, but he’s getting his due (finally!) in a graphic novel that will debut at Comic-Con. Titled (fittingly), The Fifth Beatle, the story follows Epstein and the band through their early days in Liverpool, their first record deal, and Epstein’s epic 1961 proclamation that “The Beatles will be bigger than Elvis!” The novel also focuses on Epstein’s life apart from the band and his personal struggle with being gay in a time when homosexuality was still a crime in England.

Check out an exclusive trailer for the graphic novel below, complete with ’60s fashion homages and a dreamy score by record producer David Kahne.

See the cinematic trailer for Charlie Huston's new thriller 'Skinner' -- EXCLUSIVE

Crime novelist and comic book author Charlie Huston once again melds pulp and tech in his upcoming thriller Skinner (out July 9). The titular character — named after the Skinner box he was raised in — is a particularly effective “asset protector” whose brutal methods have left him on the fringes of the intelligence community.

Now, an ornate and evolving cyber-terrorist attack is about to end that long exile. His asset is Jae, a roboticist with a gift for seeing the underlying systems violently shaping a new era of global guerrilla warfare.

At the root of it all is a young boy, the innocent seed of a plot grown in the slums of Mumbai. Brought to flower, that plot will tip the balance of world power in a perilous new direction.

Jason-Mott-The-Returned

Poet Jason Mott’s upcoming novel The Returned has a good chance of being one of the breakout debuts of the year. Here's the title of Laini Taylor's third 'Daughter of Smoke & Bone' novel. Plus, a special trailer! -- EXCLUSIVE

God-And-Monsters.jpg

Daughter of Smoke & Bone blew us away; Days of Blood & Starlight didn’t disappoint; and now we’re anxiously awaiting Laini Taylor’s third and final installment of her celestial epic, which we’ve learned is called Dreams of Gods & Monsters (out Spring 2014).

Dreams starts where Days left off, with Karou and Akiva discovering each other alive — although Karou is still not ready to forgive Akiva for killing the only family she’s ever known. And now, through an act of staggering deception, Karou has taken control of the chimaera rebellion and is intent on steering its course away from dead-end vengeance. When Jael’s brutal angel army trespasses into the human world, Karou and Akiva must ally their enemy armies against the threat. It is a twisted version of their long-ago dream, and they begin to hope that it might forge a way forward for their people. And, perhaps, for themselves – maybe even toward love. But there are bigger threats than Jael in the offing. From the streets of Rome to the caves of the Kirin and beyond, humans, chimaera, and seraphim will fight, strive, love, and die in an epic theater that transcends good and evil, right and wrong, friend and enemy.

If you can’t wait for the conclusion, you’re absolutely not alone! Taylor’s fans are particularly vocal and involved, and to celebrate that enthusiasm, Taylor has hosted a contest for a fan-made trailer for Days of Blood & Starlight. See the winning video by Christine Tyler below, plus a few words from Taylor herself! READ FULL STORY

Is this the literary novel of the summer? See the star-studded trailer for 'And Sons' by David Gilbert -- EXCLUSIVE

and-sons-cover

Summer might traditionally be the time for skimpy clothes and skimpy reading, but if your brain is feeling flabby after beach reads with titles like Big Girl Panties — not that there’s anything wrong with those — give & Sons by David Gilbert (out July 23) a try.

Drawing comparisons to The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach and The Emperor’s Children by Claire Messud, & Sons follows the life of A.N. Dyer, a reclusive J.D. Salinger-like figure whose novel Ampersand stands a classic of American teenage angst. As Andrew Newbold Dyer delivers the eulogy at his oldest friend Charles Henry Topping’s Upper East Side funeral, he suffers a breakdown over the life he’s led and the people he’s hurt and the novel that will forever endure as his legacy. He must gather his three sons for the first time in many years — before it’s too late.

So begins a wild, transformative week, as witnessed by Philip Topping, who, like his late father, finds himself caught up in the swirl of the Dyer family. First there’s son Richard, a struggling screenwriter and father, returning from self-imposed exile in California. In the middle lingers Jamie, settled in Brooklyn after his 20-year mission of making documentaries about human suffering. And last is Andy, the half brother whose mysterious birth tore the Dyers apart 17 years ago, now in New York on spring break, determined to lose his virginity before returning to the prestigious New England boarding school that inspired Ampersand. But only when the real purpose of this reunion comes to light do these sons realize just how much is at stake, not only for their father but for themselves and three generations of their family.

Intrigued? Check out this exclusive trailer for & Sons, which features friends, admirers, publishing pros, and celebrities — including Brooke Shields — talking about their favorite A.N. Dyer novel. READ FULL STORY
