Finance Minister Abdulla Jihad revealed that as the decision has been made to annul the agreement made between the government and Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) operator, GMR Group, the airport would now be run by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

Jihad told Haveeru that preparations are now underway for MACL to assume operations of the airport.

"There is no decision made to award the airport to anyone else. Just like before, MACL will run the airport now. But the company must be restructured. The company's board will do everything necessary in that regard," Jihad detailed.

Minister further said that no decision has yet been made on the fees being charged by GMR after taking the reins of the airport. However, MACL board will make a decision on the matter, he added.

Finance Minister stated that the assistance of foreign experts would be used to run the airport in future.

The cabinet's decision came in the wake increasing pressure from the pro-government political parties to annul the agreement.
