Taxis end protest at Melbourne Airport

Taxi drivers have ended a protest at Melbourne Airport.

Police say about 100 drivers took part in the protest near the entrance to the terminal, from around 8:00am (AEST).

They are angry about the scrapping of the airport's short fare system.

Melbourne Airport says the protest did not affect taxi waiting times.

It follows angry scenes on Friday when cabbies blockaded the airport's taxi ranks and clashed with police and security guards over plans to change the fare system.

The airport will no longer allow drivers to skip the taxi queue when they pick up a short fare.

The Victorian Taxi Association's David Samuel is calling on drivers to stay calm and wait for talks to commence between the association and the airport.

"Melbourne Airport have said that they're happy to talk to and hear suggestions about a short fare system that will address their concerns," he said.

"We'll put to them a system we think will address their concerns and also allow drivers to have a short fare system so that they're satisfied with the outcome."
