Comments are back, will use Disqus as a temporary measure

A dramatic reconstruction of the rebuilding of comments. Or something.

Good news for those of you who’ve been waiting to lecture Rich over his flagrant deviation from Game of Thrones canon: we’re finally lifting the eerie silence that has fallen over the PC Gamer community.

As you’ve probably noticed, our forum and comment threads have been disabled since the discovery of a malicious script that was lurking in the forum’s code. Thankfully, an investigation revealed that no user data had been compromised, but we’re going to use this downtime to review our choice of forum software. As a result, we’re not yet ready to re-introduce the site’s native community functionality.

As a temporary solution, we’ve added support for the third-party commenting platform Disqus. That means, whether you’re a long-standing member of the PCG community, or looking to join the discussion for the first time, you’ll need to sign up for a Disqus account. Don’t worry: it’s a painless process, and one that can be optionally done through a Facebook, Google+ or Twitter log-in.

As I hoped, CS:GO’s appearance on Steam Workshop eased the map drought irking Global Offensive players since launch. About 700 Defusal, Hostage Rescue, Deathmatch, Arms Race, and other maps now populate Steam Workshop, and all are available for easy download (and auto-updating) through Steam. I’ve played a bunch of them with our community over the past week.

Last week, we set you the challenge of snapping pictures of your mad, powerful, custom PC rigs with the aim of winning a brand new Alienware TactX keyboard and mouse. It was all to celebrate the release of new God Vulcan (no, nothing to do with Star Trek) in MOBA game Smite.

We had two major requests of Orcs Must Die!: let us play with friends, and let us play forever. Orcs Must Die! 2 launches later this month with both of those features, and we want to be the first ones to show you them tossed together.

Dota 2 updates continue, but should we review the game?

As I type this, Dota 2 is the most popular game on Steam and is being played by 52,219 people. This is a game that’s supposedly still in closed beta, one that has numerous holes waiting to be filled by proposed features, and which is still being updated all the time.

But given that it’s easy to get in to the Dota 2 beta (you can even buy your way in), and given that you can pay for items in the Dota 2 store now, should PC Gamer review the game? We’d like to hear what you think.

The first Guild Wars 2 beta weekend event for pre-purchase players begins tonight at 8pm GMT (12pm PDT). European players are cordially invited to join the PC Gamer community in exploring the game for the first time.

The leader of our Guild Wars community, Archernick, has rallied the troops on the Desolation EU server. He’s started a thread on the PC Gamer forum where you can find out more and share your contact details. There’s also a thread on downloading the GW2 client if you’ve already got access.
