Blogger’s Choice: Reus Game Review
June 12, 2013 in Blogger's Choice, Game Review, Godgame, PC, Simulation
A 2d side scrolling “godgame” that shares some similar concepts with one of my most favorite games of all time, Black and White 2. However, instead of having totally devout humans, in Reus, no matter how benevolent you are, greed may make them turn on you and each other. Such is human nature.
ATTENTION: Congratulations to the two winners of the giveaway contest! It was really hard to decide who to pick. I decided to have 2 winners instead of one because everyone had such wonderful entries! If you didn’t get an email by now, I encourage you to try again on the next giveaways =).
Reus
An Indie “godgame” Review Developed by: Abbey Games
NOTICE: Interview with one of the developers will be at the end of the review before the giveaway contest questions. Personally, I found the developer’s answers inspirational. Personally, it gave me the nudge I need to finally start working on my own indie game. I also found that it can be applied to life challenges.
——————————–
Shoutout of Gratitude: I want to thank the developers of Reus for making it possible to host this giveaway and for the interview. Thank you for giving this new blogger your time even though I knew you guys were probably having a very busy and hectic week since I contacted you guys around the time you just launched. I also want to say I’m so happy with all the positive feedbacks you’ve received and want to say this is one of my favorite games to play at the moment. Hugs to you all!
What got me interested: I’m actually a huge fan of godgames. I just absolutely love them! I like having the power over civilizations and taking care of them with all the kindness and love every benevolent gods bestow upon their people. I also love to save the game, then start smiting left and right as I maniacally laugh in front of my computer which not only baffles those by me, but I was told it also scared them. As mentioned, I love Black and White 2, and I still believe to this day nothing can really compare to that game when it comes to the godgame genre. I’ve been looking around the internet and waiting for a game that will even come close to BW2. Seems like my patience paid off with this game. It didn’t only gave me a BW2 nostalgia but it also gave me a whole new experience which I totally appreciate because as much as I love BW2, I still also yearn for something that’s different and can stand on it’s own. I personally think Reus has that capability.

First Impression and Gameplay
The Opening Scene
I want to talk about the opening scene first because I really think it’s something worth watching. The artstyle for me was personally cute with it’s caveman/child-like drawings, but the story it conveys is a serious issue and I think, something to be seen because it is true. What I mean is, even though we don’t really have giants magically terraforming the earth to help us, we ARE still hurting mother nature with our greed for resource. I know I may sound like a “hippie” or “tree hugger” but we are over harvesting and over using natural resources faster than the time earth can recuperate and as the opening scene shows, when civilizations gets greedy, we do wage war against neighbors. I understand some people may say, well it’s just an opening scene, calm the heck down. However, I really appreciate that it shows those things and the game’s mechanics covers that. It makes it more real for me.
Artstyle/Visual
Reus opted for a 2D side scrolling graphic style which I actually found lovely, clean, and refreshing. If you guys played that iphone game called Godfinger, it will remind you of that. I personally like it this way because you focus more on the game content than “beastly” graphics. Plus, just look at the giants!!! I want one…
My Personal Opinion Concerning The HUD and Font Size
This is my personal issue, maybe others also have it, but I find the font too small that it strains my eyes after a little bit. I do however like the game’s HUD because I find it informative yet it’s still clean. What I mean is that some complex games tend to overdo it with the information they try to cram on the screen and it can be overwhelming to new players. I’ve actually met people who quit the game they want to play just by staring at HUDs like that. Reus may not be complex to some, but the ones I’ve talked to who played the game told me it is, so this is something they probably appreciate. Another thing is, feel free to correct me if I missed it; is that there seem to be no indicator whether symbiosis and specialization is active or not. I only know it is because I try to remember how much each things originally gave (food, wealth, tech) and then I check if they’re higher. To those who have not played Reus, this may be confusing, but don’t worry I’ll break it down for ya in a bit.
Tutorial
I really super duper highly suggest you go through the tutorial before going through freeplay. First, you won’t be able to play the other modes anyway until you play some of the tutorial first. Second, you will probably miss a lot of important information about the game’s mechanics that could ultimately help your settlers thrive such as taking advantage of symbiosis and specializations. Lastly, because the game can get complex, the tutorial will give you a nice breakdown of how the game works.
The Giants
You can pretty much see the influence Black and White 2 gave the game in terms of using Giants to do the Gods/Goddesses wishes. I want to make clear however, that that’s pretty much where the similarities end. You’ll find in the interview that the game, and I’m guessing the use of giants as well; was also influenced by this awesome short story animation (which was the inspiration of the game, ya’ll should watch it). Now, couple things about these cute giants. First is that each giants have their own type of terraforming depending on what kind of giants they are, such as: Swamp, Ocean, Mountain, and Forest. The other thing is, you must have each giant work together to really help the settlers prosper in their civilization.
Here they are in case you guys want to see how they look like:
As you progress in the game, your giants gain new “aspects”. Aspects are basically abilities that “buffs up” the floras, faunas, and minerals you plopped down in a number of ways, such as giving it another trait. Ex: Enhancing a peppermint tree with the “herb” aspect would give it the “food” trait. Not only that, if you used the right aspect on whatever it is you’re using it on, it may even give it the power of transmutation (you’ll read about transmutation below).
Projects
These are buildings that can be built in settlements by meeting the projects’ requirements and they usually come with a time limit. Finishing projects can make an ambassador appear. Certain aspects can only be unlocked by certain ambassadors (like swamp ambassador, ocean ambassador, etc.) They basically upgrade your giants.
Game Mechanics:
Transmutation
Transmuted floras, faunas, and minerals changes what they originally were physically and even biologically. So think of it as a buff up variant of it’s former different self. An example would be transmuting a peppermint into a tomato or transmuting a chicken into a rabbit. The transformation also gives them different symbiosis and abilities.
Symbiosis
This is something that you really have to take advantage off in order to help your settlers thrive to its fullest potential. Basically it is like a bonus effect when you place certain floras, faunas, minerals, or buildings (projects) by others that they can have symbiosis with. For example: Placing a peppermint tree by a mineral yields +7 bonus in technology for every mineral by it. As stated above, transmuted plants, animals, and minerals also end up with different symbiosis from their former selves.
Specialization
It’s pretty much like a project’s version of symbiosis. Scientific Fun Fact: Symbiosis scientifically pertains to biologically different organisms living on each other’s beastness. Like how anemones give clown fishies homes and protection with their sting of doom and in turn, the clown fishies poopies give the anemones ..er…nomnoms. The anemones basically eat Nemo doodoo D:.
Greed
Like in many civilizations throughout history…people go cray cray for wealth and become greedy. This will cause villages to attack neighboring villages. If they become too greedy, we have no choice but to smite them so this will wipe out the entire village. There will be an indicator on just how greedy a village currently is so keep on a lookout for that.
Final Verdict
If you’re like me who’s been looking for a decent godgame, I would hands down recommend Reus. It doesn’t only takes us back to godgames we loved playing back in the day, but it also gives us something different along with a bit more complexity than other games that share the same genre like BW2. Personally speaking, in terms of game mechanics, I prefer Reus over BW2 which surprised me. Unlike my favorite game BW2 where I only need to focus on protecting and caring for my civilization or tormenting them when I feel like it; in Reus, I’m forced to keep tabs on whether one of my villages is getting too greedy and about start a war against another village under my care. The game’s mechanics also gave me the opportunity to maximize my villages potential for growth through symbiosis and specialization forcing me to be more cautious about my villages borders and the placements of my faunas, floras, minerals, and projects. It requires more planning which I like because it gives me a challenge. I also have more options with how I want to raise my villages and can even have them specialize in either food, wealth, or tech which I really like. This is a game that truly needs to be tried.

DEADLINE: JUNE 18, 2013
- If you were a god or goddess, would you be a malevolent or a benevolent and what would be your master plan.
- What would you do with your powers? How would you affect your humans lives?
First OFF! I would make Lex queen of the world lol =). Do I get it now?
Ok, umm.. I guess I would show myself to the world and promise them I would help on their problems. Then whenever they ask me something, I smile and say no XD. That’s the dream. ALSO! make pokemon. Yeah, that would be cool
Oh yeah, also. I would make the creators of Reus rulers of the world =) Yeah that’s right other participators, I did it.
Hi Lex, hope you’re feeling better, great review and i was a big black and white fan back in the early days of Lionhead. Without further ado:
If I was a God then I would be benevolent and my master plan would involve eliminating issues such as hunger and intolerance.
With my powers I would provide for the needs of the humble by supplying them with what they don’t ask for and by not supplying others with what they do ask for.
Take care.
If I were a goddess, I’d be benevolent! I’d try to be a good ruler but let the ruled have their say at times. My master plan would be to make them improve in technology but I’d let them do their own research, so they’d more understand what responsibilities as well. If I just gave them power they’d be more likely to abuse it because they wouldn’t understand :/ With my powers I’d go on trips in the human world, to see how far they’ve progressed, and help the ones in need now and then, if I do happen to see them. I may grant a wish or two if I do happen to see people that seem deserving of them :D I might also use my powers to punish people who have committed serious crimes, and if they do not seem to want to change. Normally I’d let people who’ve made mistakes have a second chance but if they squander that, bad luck to them if I hear about it XD
Thanks for the chance!!
Great review of Reus! Def enjoyed the interview with the devs as well, always glad when indie developers have bits of insight into game creation to share.. as far as Malevolent/Benevolent distinction, if I were a god, I think I would have to be non-benevolent god. My master plan wouldn’t be one of complete seduction of human’s into “hell,” but more along the lines of Dionysus/Bacchus in that I would lead humans into hedonism and the pursuits of the flesh. Basically, I’d use my powers to have one long 24/7/365 party going on around me for eternity.. Come and worship at my altars and let the fiesta begin!
._. aka you gna b the god of sluttyness xD hahahah
haha, well, let’s just say I think I know enough of human nature not to try and control it for altruistic/egoistic desires.. I’d simply let humanity do what humanity does, and if they praise me whilst drunk or in the throes of passion.. well, who am I to deny them the chance to worship me ;)
Great review, I loved B&W2 this really does look as amazing!
◦If you were a god or goddess, would you be a malevolent or a benevolent and what would be your master plan.
If I was a God, I would be a Malevolent. My master plan would be to control freedom, peace, war and technology across the world!
◦What would you do with your powers? How would you affect your humans lives?
I would use my powers to start with two different cities, one built peacefully and given everything they will ever need. A Paradise City. The other, built with what they need, grown to praise me and follow my every order. Creating a massive unbeatable army using technology progresses from my other city. Build that army and take over the world, then the universe!
Muhahaha.
take me down to paradise city,
where the grass is green and the girls are pretty.
oh won’t you please take me home.
Hiho Lexie!
Thanks for this amazing review :)
I will surely read it again slowlier at home to enjoy it thrice :D
If you were a god or goddess, would you be a malevolent or a benevolent and what would be your master plan.
I would be a goodgod and I wouldn’t do anything at all!!!
Why would you do anything? Surely someone will come and ruin my plans (mischievous ninjas, mischievous ninjas everywhere….)
The allmighty god of laziness!! Yay me!!
What would you do with your powers? How would you affect your humans lives?
As I said before… I would do nuthin!
I’ll let them roam free :D
Cheers :3
Damn! Your reviews just keep getting better and better girl! And you’re also getting some exposure thanks to “bigger” and more well known titles. But now, I’ll begin telling you my plan!
If I was a god I would be both benevolent and malevolent, atleast in my point of view. First of all I would provide humanity with the best possible tech in the universe and then I would command them to conquer the rest of the Solar System. If in during that quest “we” ended up finding signs of sapient life I would make sure that my minions back on Earth would get a proper trading deal with them, if they refused, they shall perish by my hands! After I’m done with making the planets of the Solar system suited for human life I would then initiate my dream and send my weaklings to the far reaches of space to explore the far they can go and conquer all hostile civilizations… I always wanted to go to space :(
Nice review, there’s been a shortage of god games recently and hopefully this is the time of their glorious return.
If I were a god I would be benevolent and my master plan would be to teach humanity to look after themselves and the planet, how?I would take each human individually and for three days give them all the knowledge and technology in the world with the condition that if they can fix every problem in the world by the end of three days they can take my place as the almighty. Nobody would ever be able to complete the challenge but each person would find a solution to a different problem and eventually they would be able to look after themselves.
Great Reviews as usual Lexie. This game has been on my wishlist since its release on Steam :)
If I were a god, I would be benevolent in that I wouldn’t mislead people, and my master plan would be bring mankind to instinctively make the choices of the most benefit to all. I would give people the ability to see how each decision made would impact not only themselves but others in the long run, so that people become less egocentric and more utilitarian. As a god, I would make mankind understand that it is not about helping oneself all the time, but about maintaining the survival and longevity of the greater populace, even if it means making sacrifices once in a while.
:)
I would be a benevolent god. My main goal would be to drive down the cost of grapes, hops, barley, and any other crops that can be used to make alcohol. As a result, the tiny little humans in my villages would constantly be drunk to the point of falling over, walking into random objects, and giggling uncontrollably at the sight of any giant/god including myself. I might even consider things like endless beer fountains and the occasional rainstorm of cherry schnapps or marshmallow-flavored vodka. My land would be one of happiness and near-constant inebriation.
I want to be one of your citizens… i loves the drink!
I would be a benevolent and try to create a world where everybody can enjoy his life how he wants. No war, no pressure, no fear. Pure life.
I love how you do these giveaways. It’s always fun to see what others come up with.
Questions? I would be both benevolent and malevolent, but invisible. Why? And how would I use my Godly powers. I would be the God I would want. Invisible, (like a ninja, and yes I did take offence to Diego’s comment) so nobody could specifically point their praise or blame.
But the God I would want, the one I would be is not good nor evil, by true definition. Evil doers beware, I would smite them. and the people wouldn’t know where it came from. For those with honorable intentions, mercy and my blessings. I wouldn’t have to “solve” things like hunger or peace. War would never be let to happen.
My motto, Peace or Perish. It is the Jedi way.
thx Lexie ;)
Well, I didn’t really want to offend anyone….
Just was thinking in that moment about a video I once saw on youtube.
Anyhow, my sorries here!
hahah I’m also a ninja, heck I’m a pirate captain ninja :x but everything’s all chill pill with me concerning your entry :D
Of course it should be a chill pill!!
After all I’m the allmighty god of laziness!!
:D
Lol. No worries, be happy. (I didn’t expect anyone to respond)
I’m also the Pyrite Pirate. I’m a sucker for shiny objects.
:P you should offer him rice to appease his heart! and relinquish one of your shiny things >:)
Great review! for sure~
Contest entry:
If I were a type of God, I’d be benevolent. My master plan would be to manipulate the lands at will. With my powers I would raise a continent or certain existing lands to the sky for amazingly beautiful and zen mountain cities. In addition to, and underwater caves bachelor pad (think of the bat cave). I would protect coastal cities that are endangered because of their sea level and provide space for prosperous growth in places that are desolate.
If I were a god, I would take the Galilean view, I would create the humans that would live on said planet, and I would leave them to their own devices.
I would never interact with them, I would treat them as an ant farm more or less, seeing what they’re capable of doing when left alone without a higher power constantly watching over them. This would let them develop along lines not normally possible with divine interaction.
If you were a god or goddess, would you be a malevolent or a benevolent and what would be your master plan.
What would you do with your powers? How would you affect your humans lives?
I think I’d be benevolent, unless I had a save button! But I would try to keep my overall influence positive, I think. I don’t think I’d have so much of a master plan, as… Just kinda shitting around a bit, haha! I could see some strange things popping up here and there if I was a diety.
I’d probably do the godly equivalent of painting? I’d make things, and leave them for people to discover, and watch what their reactions are. Maybe try to make it so that the more devout that people are to me (If I had people worship me,) the better the benefits they get. (Maybe get a couple different sects going, with slightly different interpretations of what I have them do.)
I’d make sure that people are peaceful, too? Get them interested in technology and innovation, just to see what the come up with. Maybe I’d give them a few magical artifacts and see if they can include those in their technology :B
It would be tempting to make some sort of magic system, too. Not sure what, though.
- If you were a god or goddess, would you be a malevolent or a benevolent and what would be your master plan?
That was an interesting question for me, but I’d imagine myself to be benevolent, but my people would come to see me as malevolent. My master plan would be to keep human life flourishing in a stable environment for as long as possible.
- What would you do with your powers? How would you affect your humans lives?
I’ve always been a tech guy. Whenever someone brings up a tech vs. nature argument, I always support tech. My reason? I see human innovation as one of the strongest forces upon this planet. I see myself as a small human being, but supported by many other human beings, to fight whatever the gods have in store for us. But in this scenario, I am the god. I would have to see human innovation as a threat. Meaning I’d have to take control of the situation.
Humans would be given all the resources they would need to survive. Plants and animals for food and clothing, freshwater supplies, wood for tools and shelters, and that would be it. I would encourage the community to grow, but I’d make a very specific set of laws (given by a Speaker for the Gods) of which the humans would have to live by. Food would be bestowed in times of need, but only if the humans obeyed the rules. Those who do not live by the rules, and grow greedy, would be cast out of society, and exiled. Humans would flourish, but only the way I’d want them too.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx
This was an excellent review of Reus, and has certainly piqued my interest! The mechanics look great, and I’m currently trying to play as many indie games as I can, to open up my views on games! This seems like a wonderful game. I’ll definitely need to bookmark this blog, hopefully there will be more wonderful reviews to follow!
Interview with the enlightened and furthermore omnipotent being Meo Dor
a report for the ‘magazine-that-no-mortal-will-ever-read’
L.T: Lets welcome Meo Dor, well-known god and patron of the human race!
M.D: Hi.
L.T: May i call you Meo?
Meo: K.
L.T: Don’t be so shy: Why don’t start by telling us what a god like you is doing all day?
Meo: Well; it was a bit stressful first, the creation of the star systems, planets, oceans and so on. These times where over for a long time. But the last hours of my godly calender turned to be extremely annoying again.
L.T: I’m sorry… What happened?
Meo: After inventing the aquatic plants for food I placed some cute pet amoebas into my lovely ocean, because i had become a bit bored soon. Because they bred like nuts everywhere i was a bit messy with the planets life-support systems. But instead of becoming extinct, they started to adapt really fast. They turned into lobsters, fishes, even sharks and began exploring the vast continents soon. This was quite a nice time for me. Always nice to remember. I had nothing to do, everything developed on his own and still was fun to watch :3
During the last time i discovered a strange mammal species that started with creating and changing the environment like nothing before! Because of this, i named them humans. They are quite funny to observe. But you can’t loose sight of your creation without having them messing up the hole ecological system. They even started to fight each other! That’s kind of disgusting >:(
First i thought about making them peacefully by force or just erasing them, but i decided to stay in the background instead. Just giving them a little bit of protection. Such a little amount that nearly nobody will notice me. Only the amount that they need to don’t suicide, of course. I decided so because only when they are able to overcome their plaques by their own they will experience true achievement. But actually i have to interfere every five minutes to prevent a nuclear war by jamming a button or something similar -.-
L.T: So why do you show so much patience with them?
Meo: Thats a good question :D
But i think i like, maybe even love them to much. Just the moment things got exhausting, I started feeling like a father. Maybe i hope they might develop and become enlightened and something similar to me one far day. But first they’ll have to get their shit together.
L.T: I think i don’t have another question. Thank you very much!
Meo: God bye!^^
I can’t say I agree with the review, although the review itself was well written and worded. Just the game, Reus, is so incredibly mind-numbingly dull and poorly implemented god mechanics, that it becomes less of a god game and more of a statistical bore.
The games main failing is the symbiotic relationship between the buildings, the villagers and everything else. If anything, the game is rather misleading. Reuse hasn’t got that much to offer other than its interesting revolving world mechanic, and the gods themselves.
The game becomes a game of statistics, as each building and pretty much everything you pop down requires a relationship with something else. Problem is, you have to constantly dig into these stats on neighbouring tiles to see which spot is the best spot to build/grow something. Even then, the interaction level that you have with the villagers has no depth to it, and they simply react/grow according to how you place down your projects. It’s all about the stats!
Reus is certainly suitable for the mobile platforms, but that’s about it. There is not much depth here, and not much gameplay…
Hii! I understand what ya mean and I appreciate your thoughts on the subject. I hope you won’t mind though that I’m still going to stand by what I wrote. For me, I like those aspects, especially symbiosis because it forces you to be more mindful of everything and go in a more tactical route. Although, in a way, it deviates from being a full god game which I think is what you mean. However, I appreciate the fact that they tried to do something out of the box for the genre. When the civilizations get bigger though, I do see that sometimes the stats and management has the possibility of becoming overbearing. By the way, thank you for stating your opinion in a respectful manner. I appreciate that a lot since you know how people get when they see something they don’t agree with.
