Apply for QTLS or ATLS
There are three stages to the Professional Formation process that leads to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) or AssociateTeacher Learning and Skills (ATLS) status. To begin the process IfL requires you first to express to us your intention to apply for QTLS or ATLS.
The statutory requirement to obtain QTLS and ATLS was removed in September 2012, along with government funding of professional formation for individual teachers and trainers. IfL now needs to charge £485 for professional formation to cover the cost of the process.
Payment will be able to be made in two instalments:
- First instalment of £100 upon completion of the expression of intent form
- Final instalment of £385 upon completion of the application and submission of completed webfolio
We have worked to keep the price down, and considering the value and recognition that QTLS brings we believe this offers good value to members.
The professional status of QTLS is important to many IfL members. In issue 12 of InTuition (spring 2013), former teaching assistants Kathy Callaghan and Angela Wellington talk about how QTLS has helped their careers.
Stage 1 - expression of intent
Use the members’ area of the website to complete the expression of intent form. This indicates to IfL that you wish to apply for Professional Formation and allows us prepare the appropriate resources to review and moderate your application.
Stage 2 - apply
After you’ve expressed your intent, you will be able to access your webfolio in REfLECT and complete the application process by completing your portfolio. You need to make sure your application is sent to us by the relevant deadline for your application period (see the table below).
Stage 3 - conferral of QTLS or ATLS by IfL
Once received, your completed application will be reviewed and moderated. If successful, you will achieve Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) or Associate Teacher Learning and Skills (ATLS) status. Certificates can now be printed through REfLECT as IfL no longer posts them out.
