Night-sky spectacular
Perseid meteors streak across the sky above Cathedral Gorge State Park in Nevada on Aug. 12. The annual display, known as the Perseid shower because the meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus in the northeastern sky, is a result of Earth's orbit passing through debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle.

Meet the olinguito
After years of sleuthing, the Smithsonian on Aug. 15 announced that it has identified a new species of carnivore. The olinguito is a rust-colored, furry mammal that lives in the treetops of the Andes Mountains and weighs two pounds, making it the most petite member of the raccoon family.
