Events set for Ninoy’s 30th death anniversary

MANILA, Philippines - The nation remembers the assassination of former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. tomorrow.

Filipinos will commemorate Aquino’s 30th death anniversary with a floral offering at his monument in Tagaytay at 7 a.m.

Tagaytay City Mayor Agnes Tolentino will lead college students in the ceremony.

At the same time, the Yellow Ribbon Movement will hold a sports festival for children ages 7 to 12 at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

At 8:30 a.m., a floral offering will be held at Aquino’s monument at the corner of P. Burgos and Roxas streets in Manila.

Mayor Joseph Estrada and the EDSA People Power Commission represented by Commissioner Cesar Sarino will lead the ceremony.

At 9 a.m., a floral offering and mass will be held on the tarmac of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 memorial marker.

After the Mass and floral offering, members of NAM-SERVE and ATOM will proceed to NAIA terminal 3 for another floral offering at the bronze bust.

Leading the ceremony are EDSA People Power Commission chairman Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., commissioners Sarino, Jose Pardo, Emily Abrera, Anton Lim, Millie Kilayko and executive director Maria Montelibano.

Sen. Bam Aquino, representing the Aquino family, will give the response.

The Philippine Long Distance Co. (PLDT) choir and Noel Cabangon will render musical numbers, along with the Philippine Air Force Band.

The EPPC provincial chapters will also have their own commemoration rites with the theme “EDSA began with Ninoy!”

The activities will end around 7 p.m. with a PAMANA Concert at the Meralco theater for the benefit of the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation with the music of Ryan Cayabyab and Fr. Manoling Francisco.
