  • Android-based malware achieved a 35% growth rate in the second quarter of 2013 according to a new report – a rate not seen since early 2012. The quarter was marked by the proliferation of twice as many new ransomware samples in Q2 as in Q1, raising the 2013 ransomware count higher than the total found in all previous periods combined.
  • A hacker going by the name Mauritania Attacker claims to have hacked Twitter and have access to every account. Twitter denies this, saying no accounts have been compromised. Mauritania Attacker’s claims would appear to be an exaggeration.
  • The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has updated two of its computer security guides to help system managers protect their systems from hackers and malware.
  • The Apple iPhone is notoriously overlooked by most malware authors – thanks in no small part to the company’s rigorous mandatory app review and code signing mechanisms for any program it allows into the App Store. But a group of Georgia Tech researchers have created the Jekyll gambit for creating iOS malware, which allows attackers to reliably hide malicious behavior that would otherwise get their app rejected by the Apple review process.
  • The previously disclosed flaw in Android’s Bitcoin wallet has now been quantified in terms of its scope: the vulnerability has left over 360,000 applications up for attack, subsequently compromising the data of thousands of users, as well as their cyber-wallets.
