During the 19th century, a group of Voortrekkers came across a huge flooded
river. Thinking they had reached the Nile, they called it after its Dutch name
"Nyl". Instead they had arrived at what we now call Nylsvlei, a 160km2
floodplain recently declared a Ramsar site due to its international conservation
importance.
The 4 000 ha reserve boasts almost 370 bird species, including breeding
vagrants, and at peak flood (every 3-4 years) over 80 000 birds can be seen!
Game includes roan antelope and tsessebe, as well as the more usual savanna
animals. For the visitor there are five birding hides, a game drive network and
the freedom to walk where one pleases, exploring this magnificent, unspoilt spot
at leisure. .
