Interfaith Conversation Cafe

Interfaith Conversation Café is an interfaith dialogue focused on questions of faith as they affect our world. These are open, facilitated conversations addressing topics of faith and society – listening and questioning with curiosity, discovery and sincerity. Those attending choose the topic for that evening. The Café is held on the third Monday of the month at the St. Paul Council of Churches, 1671 Summit Ave., St. Paul (corner of Summit and Pierce.) Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and conversation begins promptly at 7 p.m.

SPIN's Interfaith Conversation Cafe for Monday Evening, August 19, 7:00 to 8:45PM, hosts the discussion theme: "Post Racial America?" How far are we from Martin Luther King's dream of judging individuals by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin? This question and those suggested by participants are open for consideration at the next meeting of Interfaith Conversation Cafe. Join us at the St. Paul Area Council of Churches, 1571 Summit Avenue (Corner of Summit & Pierce) in St. Paul. Treats and beverages are provided.

The Conversation Café approach uses six principles common to most dialogue and circle groups to guide the conversations: 1) Suspend judgment as best you can; 2) Respect one another; 3) Seek to understand rather than persuade (No attempts at conversion!); 4) Invite and honor diversity of opinion; 5) Speak what has personal heart and meaning; 6) Go for honesty and depth without going on and on.

The Café adapts two ancient traditions: the talking-stick circle and deep dialogue. Two rounds of speaking without interruption introduce a quality of listening and reflecting that opens people to themselves and one another. People can pass if they like, being silent as their way of speaking. Then a lively conversation happens, keeping in mind the agreements to inquire rather than assert and debate. At the end, a final 'talking stick' round anchors for each participant the gems they are taking away.

The event is free and open to the public. You are welcome one-time or many. Coffee/tea and snack provided. (Please bring your own mug.) A free will donation is invited. Spread the word and invite friends/colleagues. For more information contact Steve at: or Joan at:
