Outdoors with Lauren: Hunting Poodle

Chris and Dee Kietrys are passionate about hunting, especially their hunting dog, Reggie.

"She's just been an incredibly good retriever," Chris Kietrys said. "I've never had a dog that's more interested in markings retrieves when birds fly up."

"She always impresses me because there might be four other dogs there, with 12 birds, but she comes back with 7 of them," Dee Kietrys said.

Reggie, named after Packers' hall of famer Reggie White, isn't your typical hunting dog.

"She asked me if I'd be interested in trying a hunting poodle so I thought about it and if it doesn't work out I can get a pointer or another lab," Chris Kietrys said.

"She agreed to it and we haven't looked back from that point."

The Kietrys say she's one of the best hunting dogs they've ever had. And she looks good doing it too.

"It takes a confident hunter to hunt with a poodle. As a matter of fact, it's gotten to the point where we deliberately put bows on her and we deliberately paint her nails just to have fun with that," Chris Kietrys said.

"It's one thing to hunt with a really nice dog but it's just phenomenal to hunt with a dog that's really nice and really pretty too."

Reggie is so passionate about hunting, she even watches it on TV.

"She's the first dog I've had that actually watches episodes of television and gets excited when there's an episode with other dogs in it," Chris Kietrys said. "And (she) also pays attention if it's a hunting show and she hear shotguns go off on TV."

One thing that the Kietrys have learned, when it comes to hunting dogs, looks can be deceiving.

"She's actually one of the easiest dogs that I've ever trained. She catches on very quickly. I've had labs before and they tend to learn through a lot of repetition but the poodle sees something once or twice and she's like, 'okay, let's go on to something else' because they get bored kind of easily."

"Once she get's out into the field and gets on bird scent, she's just a super hunting dog."
