Workshop: Teaching Social Studies in Today's Classroom - Monday, December 30, 8:30 - 12 p.m. Kansas Historical Society, Topeka. K-8 teachers can receive guidance in teaching to the Kansas History, Government, and Social Studies Standards (KHGSS) and the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards (KCCRS). An optional tour of the restored Kansas State Capitol will be available in the afternoon. Workshop and capitol tour are free. Registration deadline is December 13. Participants will receive samples of the standards-based educational materials developed by the Historical Society's Education Division. Conference: A Grand Bargain: Social Studies, Literacy, and Technology - Sunday - Monday, November 10 - 11, Derby High School, Derby. On November 10, the Historical Society will introduce educators to Project Archaeology. Kansas specific units for upper elementary and middle school students will be included in this three-hour mini workshop. Registration required. Conference sponsored by the Kansas Council for History Education, Kansas Council for the Social Studies, Kansas Geographic Alliance, Kansas Historical Society, and Kansas Department of Education. Kansas Territorial Characters performance with students.Schedule Kansas Territorial Characters Performance - Students can participate in a 1850s territorial town hall political meeting at Constitution Hall State Historic Site. The Lecompton Reenactors will portray some of the notable people from the Bleeding Kansas era as they passionately discuss the pros and cons of the slavery issue. The group can also perform on-site at schools within one hour drive of Lecompton. Schedule a presentation for 2013-14 classes at 785-887-6520 or consthall@kshs.org.

Kansas Day: January 29, 2014 - Kansas Day will be commemorated at the newly restored State Capitol and several state historic sites. Visit kshs.org for details as the day nears.
