Robbie Kruse made a spectacular starting debut for Bayer Leverkusen, scoring twice in a 4-1 Bundesliga win over Mainz on Saturday.

Handed his first start after three appearances off the bench this season, the Australia striker took his chance with a man-of-the-match display.

Kruse cooly finished two opportunities while he also provided the assist for Lars Bender to give the away side a 3-0 lead at half-time.

Kruse was substituted in the 75th minute as Leverkusen consolidated third place in the table.

Kruse has made an impressive start with Leverkusen after sealing a move from Fortuna Dusseldorf at the end of last season.

Kruse came off the bench in a 4-2 Champions League loss to Manchester United last week.

Also on Saturday, Australian striker Scott McDonald opened his account for English Championship side Millwall.

McDonald netted the winner in a 1-0 victory away to Charlton for his first goal in eight appearances with the club.
