Americans already give poor people tools to get out of poverty. But they have to use them. Since so many DO get out of poverty, it is quite doable. But you do have to show up, shut up, give a good effort every day, and not have a bunch of kids young out of wedlock. And what can society do to change that? The individual makes choices. Some make choices that get them out of poverty, some do not.

I used to think John Block was kind of a tool, but after reading this, I respect him a lot more.

You had a chance to talk about the effects of structural discrimination on employment, health care, education, housing, immigration policy, and so much more... and all you published were his facile comments on gangs? And even then, you let him reduce race ot a Black/White binary, without noting that as problematic?

About the blog

The mission of Pulso Latino is simple: To record the “pulse” of the “Latino” community and provide "mi gente" (the Latino community) an opportunity to be heard, recognized and celebrated. We’ll be doing that in print and on this blog – chronicling our community’s achievements, our day-to-day joys and sorrows and yes, our challenges.

If you have news, or an event that you would like to be considered for publication please contact me at: fmartinez@theblade.com or 419-724-6154.
