Awarded Fair Play Diploma for Promotion of Fair Play in 2002

Christopher MinkoChristopher Minko has worked in Cambodia since 1996 to develop disability sports along with a focus on raising awareness of the issues facing the survivors of Landmines via sport. Minko, a committed humanitarian, was responsible for the establishement of the National Paralympic Committee of Cambodia in 1997, leading to the historic first time  participation of a Cambodian Team in the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games with Minko as Chef de Mission. Under his direction, a National Volleyball League of 12 teams, of which nine are rural based, has been  established with an annual competition program and the Cambodian national Volleyball Team has participated in 4 international tournaments reaching a current No. 1 ranking in the Asian Pacific region after winning the Gold medal at the recent FESPIC 2002 Games (Korea). In 2003 Minko is continuing his work with the Cambodian Sports for Life program in order to expand  the program beyond Volleyball, which is now effectively managed by Cambodians for Cambodians with a disability, to develop sporting and recreational activities for Cambodian children with a disability and sports for Cambodian wheelchair athletes. Christopher Minko has dedicated the past six years of his life developing sports for persons with a disability in Cambodia. Besides the need for sports skills within the rehabilitation process of persons with a disability, there was in Cambodia, and still is, an enormous need to re-establish the positive moral values that fair play encompasses in a nation recovering from over 30 years of conflict  including the horror of genocide. Cambodian athletes with a disability are now recognized in their country as national Heroes raising significant awareness nationally of the ability of Cambodians with a disability to be active and contributing members of Cambodian society.
