button it’s better to give…

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! To show you how thankful we are for our Paperie readers, we’re offering up this free baby tee design for use at Zazzle – it would make the perfect client holiday gift!

Buttons and Bows Photography t shirt baby newborn infant Orlando Florida

UPDATE: The design has been updated for the year “2012“. You can now see how the shirts look when you get them from Zazzle here. Try finding a Zazzle coupon code at retailmenot.com before making your purchase!

You can either download the .psd file below and move things around to add your own logo — or if you prefer to just print the design as-is, use the Paperie Zazzle Store and choose between a baby onesie, an infant t-shirt, an infant organic creeper, or a baby long-sleeve tee in sizes 6, 12, 18, and 24 months.

→ download link ← (please note this file was designed in CS2 and you must have Photoshop or Elements and know how to edit a .psd layered file — I do not provide technical support for this download)

You can edit the background color in this .psd file and move layers around. However, you cannot edit the text as-shown or make changes to the graphic. If you choose to print the design with a vendor other than Zazzle please make sure to check the size and crop guidelines first! Paperie is not responsible for mis-prints.

If you prefer to print the shirt without a logo, or do not have the ability to edit .psd layers, you can order it directly from Zazzle here.

PLEASE MAKE SURE when ordering your shirt(s) that you use the Zazzle “Customize It!” tools (as shown below) to correctly place the “Santa baby / camera” graphic on the various designs / styles so the entire graphic appears and is centered! It will change size and placement depending on design selected and it is up to you to confirm proper placement on your item before ordering!

Zazzle customize it

Click the orange “Customize It!” button to get started and use controls shown. Make sure you also select the “Santa baby / camera” image in the “Customize It!” section because it will not move or resize until the image is selected to edit.

Here are the onesies I got from Zazzle for Christmas 2011 and they turned out so cute! I customized them for my Buttons and Bows Photography clients:

I added a smaller version of the Santa-camera with my URL on the t-shirt backs.

And here is a similar onesie that Buttons and Bows Photography gifted to clients in 2008. They were a HUGE hit!

button so boss

Everyone getting ready for the 2nd annual Wrap Battle that kicks off on December 2nd? Here’s another great way to spice up your packaging – heat embossing!

I started the “habit” a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love it! Here are a few tips and tools of the trade to get you started…

And read ’til the end to find out how to win a heat embossing tool of your own!

heat emboss
Shown in the above photo: Martha Stewart Heat Embossing Tool, VersaMark Watermark Stamp Pad, VersaMark Dazzle Watermark Stamp Pad Frost, Martha Stewart Embossing Stamp Pad, and Tidy Crafts No Spill TrayMate

heat emboss
Shown in the above photo: Opaque White Embossing Powder, Ranger Rich Red Embossing Powder, Martha Stewart Crafts Scandinavian Wooden Stamp Set, VersaMark Watermark Stamp Pad, and HB Photo Packaging kraft 5×7 box

heat embossing

First take your stamp, press into the clear stamp pad (just like a regular ink stamp), and stamp the box or paper you will be embossing. I suggest a few trial runs first to get the hang of it! (Martha Stewart has more detailed instructions here.)

Then pour your embossing powder over the area you’ve just stamped.

heat emboss

Tap the item to remove the excess powder, and your stamp will have the powder covering it. You might need a small brush to remove excess powder – you don’t want to emboss it as well! Take the heat tool and cover the stamped / powdered area until you see it transform from a “powder” finish to a “slick” / embossed finish.

heat embossing

heat emboss

Let dry and repeat with additional stamps / colors!

button here we go loopty-loop

Like me, many of you are packing client orders like crazy right now or are about to… In the past I’ve shared a demo on how to make a “flat bow” for shipping.

Now I’m sharing a demo on how to make a “loop bow” that will also survive the pack’n'ship process.

loop bow 1

First, you need to have 1 – 1½” ribbon on hand and a hot glue gun. Wired ribbon is optional, but will hold a prettier shape. Cut four strips approximately 8½” long, and one shorter strip approximately 3½” long.

loop bow 2

Take your hot glue gun and put a line of glue down the ribbon’s edge on one side – then press the other side down on top of the glue to create a loop.

loop bow 3

You will end up with five ribbon loops – four large and one small.

loop bow 4

Divide the four larger loops into two pairs. For each pair you will want to glue one loop on top of the other making an “X” shape as shown. All this takes is a dab of glue in the center of one loop, and then pressing the other loop on top of it to make an “X”.

loop bow 5

Now take your two “X” loop pairs and keep one as an “X”, and turn the other to make a “+” sign as shown.

loop bow 6

Put a dab of hot glue in the center of the “X” and place the “+” on top of it – gluing the two loop pairs together as shown.

loop bow 7

Now take the small loop that remains and run a line of hot glue down the seam on the back side. Attach it to the center of the larger loops already glued together.

loop bow 8

If you wish, take additional ribbon to wrap around the package length-wise and width-wise and hot glue into place. (I place a business card under the areas I’m gluing so that no glue accidentally gets on the box.)

loop bow 9

Now glue the bow to the ribbon around the box, or the box itself. Puff up each of the loops with your fingers and voilà!

loop bow 10

Here are a couple of other examples showing wired ribbon and grosgrain. You can also hot glue embellishments to the center of the bows.

And there you have it – a pretty loop bow in ten steps or less! Just in time for the upcoming annual packaging contest

Have a great weekend!
-Robyn & Todd

button the “it” bag

We’re excited to have a new vendor at Paperie today for a fun guest post / giveaway! Please help us welcome…THEIT Camera Bags!

theit logo

THEIT creates camera bags for photographers that value both style and substance. With designs that aim to capture classic modernity with a sense of playfulness, this philosophy exemplifies the essence of the THEIT customer: someone who is independent, inspired, and full of life, who cannot help but to capture the beauty in her world through the lens.

An homage to the well-known fashion term “the it bag“, the brand represents more than the most coveted piece for the season, but a new wave of design enabling style, function and versatility for the fashion-minded photographer. Inspired by the runway and the streets, THEIT‘s vision is to uphold a fashion standard that helps photographers live their dreams in style.
