Recently on our Facebook page, I showed photos of an Artsy Couture gallery wrap canvas “deconstruction” and included this description:

Interested in what some canvas company’s products look like “deconstructed”? I reviewed and photographed Artsy Couture 5×5 sets for a recent column and carefully took one apart. I have to say I’m even more impressed after opening it than I was before, and I didn’t think that was possible!

The canvases are mounted and stapled to what appears to be a very thick masonite or a very thick SOLID fiber/wood board block. (Think those masonite looking clipboards we had in high school, but thicker…) The black back mat covering is thicker than a quarter, as shown. The canvas itself was very clear, crisp, vivid and true to color – and the construction inside is even more solid than out. Their website says, “The tightest corners in the industry.” I can verify that is completely correct compared to other canvases I’ve seen and owned over the years!

Happy weekend! This post will answer several “hey, where did you get…?” questions. But first we have a winner to announce in our Paper Source gift card giveaway…and it’s scraphappyrhodes!

Congrats and thanks to everyone who entered / gave us suggestions for vendors to feature here at Paperie! We’d love to hear more of your ideas and suggestions so please leave them in the comments. If your vendor is featured, we’ll give you a little something to say “thanks”!

I’m constantly e-mailed by photographers wanting to know “where did you get the peapod?” I actually hand-painted it myself after finding something I thought would work – it was hidden back in a clearance bin.

I found this one for under $40 $50 on eBay – don’t suspect it will stay there long.

But never fear! I have found a vendor that makes them, and they are almost identical to mine – you can see / order them here at the Galpin Studios Etsy store, or request an order here at Galpin Studios on Facebook.

      I think if you made a bright fabric triangle sail and attached it to a dowel
      rod on the brightly colored ones, it would make a cute “sailboat”, too!

(The precious little peapod hat of mine is from Knitty Bitty Apparel on Etsy.)

If you’re looking for a mossy or grassy blanket similar to the ones I use in my peapod and nest, I bought the one shown above from Baby P Designs on Etsy. I highly recommend them! The “nest” is a simple grapevine wreath from JoAnn’s.

As Christmas approaches each year, I’m bombarded with e-mails asking “where did you get the sleigh?” I honestly don’t know because it was a surprise from my mom in Oklahoma. I have seen some almost identical – albeit slightly smaller – in Hobby Lobby so bring your tape measurers and see if you can make it work! The adorable hat shown is by Fuzzy Lumpkin Crochet on Etsy. The blanket shown is similar to the Plushy Pom Pom by Ooh So Chic Boutique on Etsy.

Another photo I’m asked about a lot is the baby on the bike. I bought the bike on clearance at Hobby Lobby. The hat shown is from Knitwitwoolies on Etsy (love her!). And the background is a canvas Bad Sass Backdrop by Heather Green Designs (#HG006).

Last but not least, the #1 question I get is “where did you get the suitcases?” That one is not so simple to answer…

First I had Tiffany blue and Christmas red sets from Paper Source. I lost both of those sets when we lost our house. (Gabi of My Funky Camera gave me one of the best gifts I have ever received when she realized they were gone, and she had one of the large Tiffany cases herself. After coaxing it away from her kids and removing the Barbie clothes inside, she sent it to me and gave me hope again in the human race!)

Right after we moved, I found similar cases at Land of Nod in pink (shown) and powder blue. I put the word out on forums, but they quickly sold out and discontinued the items.

However, as I recently shared on Facebook, Kate’s Paperie just started selling two similar sets – red large / small and blue large / small. You will need the large size to hold a newborn or baby!

If you’re sitting there thinking, “Those are cute, but they sure are pricey…I don’t know…” Yeah, they’re not cheap. (You can get a 20% off code mailed to you immediately if you sign up for the newsletter first though.) Now where were we? Oh yes, the price. If you don’t buy them, and you really want them, you will regret it. Trust me on this. I always thought I’d get another set…one day…and never did. And it seemed every session I styled after that, the color I didn’t buy was the color I would need to make it work. They are HARD to find, and they sell out quickly once word gets out. Do I like these as much as my original Paper Source sets? Not really. But would they be a good enough substitute? Yes. It’s your call!

I wanted to feature another one of my favorite finds…the Pebbles Inc. Ribbon Iron. Keep reading to find out how you can win a ribbon iron of your own – or the i-magicut ribbon cutter we just shared – your choice of prizes!

I order ribbon off eBay and Etsy all the time, and a lot of it is mailed out wrapped around a piece of chipboard – so it arrives with multiple creases. I’ve had a few Paper Source spools of ribbon show up creased as well.

Then one day I ran across the Ribbon Iron at stitchsteals.com. It looks / works very much like a flat-iron styling tool for your hair, but at a lower heat setting that won’t damage synthetic fabrics in ribbon.

I use it to flatten the creases out of small muslin bags as well.

This handy tool cuts and heat-seals the ends of ribbon up to 3″-wide. No more fraying! You can cut straight edges, on the diagonal, and even the popular “Chevron” cut. Everyone getting ready for the 2nd annual Wrap Battle that kicks off on December 2nd? Here’s another great way to spice up your packaging – heat embossing!

I started the “habit” a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love it! Here are a few tips and tools of the trade to get you started…

First take your stamp, press into the clear stamp pad (just like a regular ink stamp), and stamp the box or paper you will be embossing. I suggest a few trial runs first to get the hang of it! (Martha Stewart has more detailed instructions here.)

Then pour your embossing powder over the area you’ve just stamped.

Tap the item to remove the excess powder, and your stamp will have the powder covering it. You might need a small brush to remove excess powder – you don’t want to emboss it as well! Take the heat tool and cover the stamped / powdered area until you see it transform from a “powder” finish to a “slick” / embossed finish.

Let dry and repeat with additional stamps / colors!
