Coldplay headline island festival

Coldplay are currently on a 16-month world tour
Coldplay and the Foo Fighters will headline this summer's Isle of Wight music festival.

The Foo Fighters, now in their eleventh year, will take to the stage on 10 June and Coldplay will close the festival on 11 June.

Other bands who will perform at the three-day event include Primal Scream, Editors, Lou Reed and Maximo Park.

The festival was revived in 2002, more than 30 years after the island's legendary 1960s events.

Placebo, Goldfrapp, The Rakes, Richard Ashcroft and Dirty Pretty Things are also confirmed for this year with more artists due to be announced.

Up to 35,000 revellers attended the festival on each day last year, when the likes of Travis, REM, Roxy Music, Razorlight and Faithless were on the bill.

The first Isle of Wight festival took place in August 1968. Jefferson Airplane were the only major act to appear, but lesser known acts included Arthur Brown, and T-Rex .

The following year was more ambitious and saw Bob Dylan, The Who, Joe Cocker and Free wow the crowds.

But the festival became a victim of its own success - nearly a million people, many without tickets, descended on the island to see the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell.

The promoters decided enough was enough until the festival staged a comeback four years ago.
