All Good Things Must Come To An End

AFFD Intern Jonathan Alvarez

Yes, it’s sad to say, today marks the last day of this year’s film festival, but that doesn’t mean we won’t go out in style. With a great lineup of films and an extravagant closing night party, this will possibly be the best Thursday of your life, and I mean it. Come out and celebrate the 12th annual Asian Film Festival of Dallas with lights, cameras, and action! Here is the line-up of films.

MASQUERADE-One of the programmer’s picks, Masquerade whisks viewers away to the lavish era of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea, telling the story of a court jester who assumes the role of the kings doppelganger. Witty and smartly told, Masquerade is sweeping many of the award ceremonies and is a beautifully shot and faithfully recreated period piece. Showtime at 12:00 p.m.

DRUG WAR-The centerpiece film of AFFD, Drug War centers around the story of Chinese Inspector Zhang Lei, who runs into Hong Kong man Choi Tin Ming and attempts to use him as a pawn to take down notorious drug lord Li, but unbeknownst he himself has been a pawn in Choi’s own game all along. Variety praised the film as ”light on action but so well-scripted and shot, it’s nonetheless edge-of-your-seat material.” Showtime at 2:30 p.m.

CHITTAGONG-One of the top ten film’s of India in 2012, Chittagong tells the story of ordinary people and extraordinary triumph. Set in 1930′s British occupied India, the film follows a 14 year old boy who bans together with his teacher and fellow classmates to hand the British their first military defeat. The film is a coming of age story that compels audiences around the world. The director even attended the first screening here at AFFD. An uplift action-drama, Chittagong is not one to miss. Showtime at 4:30 p.m.

LIBRARY WARS-The closing night film, Library Wars will have it’s Southwest Premiere at AFFD. It’s the year 2019, and Tokyo has passed a controversial new law called the ‘Media Betterment Act’.  This law places controls on freedom of speech to be monitored by the government. With an armed government force ready to enforce the laws, a group called The Library Defense Force is established to resist the government’s censorship. What ensues is a story that unfolds between books, gun play, and romance in this tale of a library at war. Showtime at 7:00 p.m.

RUROUNI KENSHIN-The second screening of AFFD’s opening night film and inspired by the beloved comic, In the last days of the Shoguns, a powerful and skilled swordsman struck fear into the hearts of soldiers. However, he vanished from sight when the last Shogun fell and Japan entered its modern age, leaving only his legend. After ten years, he returns but with a vow to kill no more. But once a ruthless gold-seeker named Kannyu who torments the people appears, his principles are questioned. Action packed with stylistic fight scenes, this film is a must see. Showtime at  9:30 p.m.

BLOOD C: THE LAST DARK-Blood-C: The Last Dark is the new chapter from the world-famous Blood: The Last Vampire saga that started in 2000. Winner of the Best Animated Feature by The 2013 Asian Film Festival of Dallas Jury Awards, Blood C: The Last Dark is the flick to catch. Filled with action, suspense, chills and thrills, the film delivers itself as an great movie experience to any movie goer. Showtime at Midnight.

Don’t forget about our Closing Night Party. RSVP here. The party starts at 8:00 p.m. and ends at 11:00 p.m. Come and mingle to celebrate another amazing year of AFFD at the Saint Ann Court Tower (next to Saint Ann Restaurant and Bar), 2501 N. Harwood Street, Dallas, TX 75201. Hope to see you there!
