Reuth Launches Innovative Method For Rehabilitation

Step Up

Reuth-Step of Mind

An Innovative Method for Walking Rehabilitation is launched at Reuth Medical Rehabilitation Center

Using Re-Step™, a unique computerized system, the new institute at Reuth helps patients rehabilitate their walking ability. Recently completed, the first treatment cycle has improved the walking competence of 10 people with brain damage.

Developed by Step of Mind Ltd., this innovative method is based on 15 years of research on the brain’s learning processes. The technique involves training while wearingspecial shoes. The soles of these shoes contain four pistons which repeatedly change the angle of the step according to preset mathematical algorithms. The training, adapted individually to each person, creates a motor learning process in the brain, improving the ability to cope with unexpected changes when walking. Over time, the patient learns to maintain balance and walk better and more effectively, even when ground conditions are not uniform.

“Practice in Re-Step™shoes simulates walking in changing environments outside the home,” explains Sarah Peleg-Shani, Head of Physiotherapy atReuthMedicalRehabilitationCenter, and director of the project. As the patient walks, the shoe collects data, and the information is transferred to the computer, enablingspecially trained physiotherapists to analyze the results and monitor progress.

And the results are impressive indeed. Sarah tells the story of D, an older man who suffered a stroke several years ago and has just now completed the Reuth Step of Mind treatmentcycle: “Before the treatment, Dhardly ever left home, and there too he was barely able to move around. At the end of the rehabilitation process he was able to walk hundreds of meters quite comfortably, and even began to goshopping by himself, use public transport and visit family and friends. For someone like him – who was all but imprisoned in his own home – this is undoubtedly a major change in quality of life.”
