St. Thomas: A colorful and rich university

    U. S. News & World Report recently presented its 2014 U.S. News Best Colleges rankings. Once again, St. Thomas University was found in the top tier among regional universities in the South.

  • Gov. Rick Scott not a good CEO

Michael Putney has this sorry excuse for a governor pegged in his Oct. 2 Other Views column, Numbers-driven Scott running for CEO. I haven’t gotten over Scott’s taking the Fifth 75 times in a deposition as CEO of Hospital Corporation of America, the company found guilty of the biggest Medicare fraud in our country’s history. A CEO who doesn’t know what’s going on in his own company?

  • What’s GOP’s message?

I have always thought that we live in an undercover dictatorship. Now it’s coming out. The Republicans keep the oppressed down in our country, but are quick to go to war to help others. Are they shutting out the Democrats or is it that they just won’t take orders from a black president?

  • Work together to fix Obamacare

Anti-Obamacare Republicans almost never say what aspects of the law they find offensive. When they do, it’s frequently the individual mandate, a conservative ideal that there should be no “free-riders.” So what are the naysayers against? Affordable private policies with subsidies for low-income individuals and families; expanded Medicaid for poor, often working, adults; no co-pay for preventive care or companies having to spend 80 percent of premiums on actual delivery of care?

  • Should I look disabled?

How dare letter writer Julio A. Velis judge anyone else’s disability. Only a few close to me know of the many surgeries I have undergone and of the long months over the years of therapy I have suffered through.

  • Respect missing from Customs officers

I don’t know if Customs and Border Protection needs more officers at Miami International Airport or if the current officers could get the job done if they were simply more efficient.

  • Show Gov. Scott the door

Our governor is the most unpopular politician in the country, and for very good reasons. Let’s all become “Scott-free” and get rid of him in the next election. I hope that Alex Sink will renew her political journey soon, as we citizens of Florida need a dedicated intelligent leader.

  • Obama, Reid snub GOP’s offers

The GOP has been trying to fund the government, but President Obama and Harry Reid have snubbed their proposals with arrogance, like a couple of spoiled brats. If you have experienced the “please wait” and “access denied” displays when trying to access the Obamacare website, just wait until you have a health issue and get the same response.
