The Roommate

On paper, The Roommate should fit into that “god this movie is bad, but at least there are multiple hot babes in it” subcategory that’s allowed stuff like Coyote Ugly and The Sweetest Thing to achieve life eternal on basic cable. It is unfortunate for them — and ideal for us — that this shockingly shameless rip-off of Single White Female sucks so incredibly hard that this is probably the last you’ll ever hear of it. The beautiful Minka Kelly plays Sara, a bushy-tailed small-town girl who relocates to L.A. for fashion school. She bunks up with Rebecca (Leighton Meester), who is equally lovely but also batshit crazy, which you can tell because they do about 600 shots of her staring sullenly at herself in a mirror (this is what crazy people DO!). It’s not long before Rebecca starts emulating aspects of Sara’s personality to an alarming degree, whether it’s co-opting The Devil Wears Prada as her fave movie (real original, girl — branch out! have you seen Straw Dogs?) or getting the name of Sara’s dead sister tattooed on her chest. Things escalate, people get hurt, an adorable kitten named Cuddles “disappears,” fucking Billy Zane shows up wearing a jeff cap and is framed for sexual assault, blah blah blah. Both Kelly and Meester are better than this flaming shit flotilla. Drew Lazor
