Types of art

Art is usually classified or organised into the type of medium that it uses to express itself.

  • Painting
  • Sculpture

But art often tries to break free of constraints of categorisation to combine any number of medium into a whole experience.

All these types of art rely on technology in some form to produce them. But it is the message or meaning that is more important. Recall that art does not need to be functional as a form of technology itself.

For example a modern sculpture like this:

is a type of sculpture that required technological construction processes such as welding, and the materials used came from technological processes. This sculpture does not have a practical function but it does provide an aesthetic or emotional function to the viewers.
