Happy Halloween! Free Printable Halloween Banner + Tutorial from Prairie Sweet Boutique!

Are your homes starting to look gloomy and grim?   This is such a fun time of year where our imaginations get to go a little wild!  Whether you like to decorate dark and spooky or bright and glittery, this Happy Halloween Banner will be the perfect addition to your decor!  Our gift to you!  You will get 5 PDF files to print and cut out.

If you want to make it look just like mine, here’s what you’ll need.

  • Scissors
  • 2 and 5/16 ” scalloped circle paper punch
  • Glue stick
  • Small single hole punch
  • Gray/white baker’s twine
  • Tape

Print 3 of the bookprint pennant PDFs, 2 of the orange chevron pennant PDFs and 2 of the multicolored diagonal stripe pennant PDFs.  Then print the letter and ghost/spooky tree pages (1 of each).  Cut out the pennants (you will have a couple extra of the orange and newsprint ones) and cut apart the letters/illustrations.  To mimic my finished version, use the scalloped circle paper punch to punch out the letters, ghosts and spooky trees.  Decide on your pattern for the pennants (refer to my example below) and glue your letters and illustrations to the corresponding pennant banners.  Punch a hole (using the small single hole punch) in both the left and right upper corners of each pennant and string them on to the baker’s twine.  I used tape on the back to keep the pennants from shifting on the twine.  That’s it!  Hang it up wherever you like!

If you take a different approach than the one we’ve demonstrated here, PLEASE take a picture and email it to info {at} prairiesweet {dot} com.  We’d love to share your photos on the blog or our Facebook page!

Enjoy!

10k Fans Party | Templates for Photographers

10KPARTY

September 20, 2013 - 6:55 PM

Stephanie Lindsey - I would love to see marketing boards (not a whole kit, but individual boards) that are for child photographers! Something fun and bright. Maybe with hot pink and stars or princesses for girls, and bright blue or green with frogs or dogs for boys. It would also be amazing to find a marketing board designed for our military. Thank you! And congratulations on 10k.

September 20, 2013 - 6:59 PM

Heather Whyte - I would like to see more Word Art themes. Themes such as birthday, family, pets, school and sports. I see a lot of art that is holiday specific but it would be great to have art for everyday moments.

September 20, 2013 - 7:36 PM

Heather Reagan - I would live to see Facebook timeline cover templates that match the Christmas cards to include for clients

September 20, 2013 - 7:37 PM

Heather Reagan - “Love” to see, not “live” :)

September 20, 2013 - 8:18 PM

Jennifer Farris - I would love to see more things geared specifically for business. Contract templates or workflow items, portrait questions, those kind of things. I use your products for most of my current marketing needs and it would be nice to have some things to round out the business end.

September 20, 2013 - 8:21 PM

Diane Poff - I would like to see Christmas card templates to fit the new Millers card, the one that the center pops out and becomes a ornament.

September 20, 2013 - 8:31 PM

Lorie Hall - I would love to see Facebook timelines that are for various photography types…weddings, seniors, babies, families, etc. I would love it if they were vintage, bright, and for black & white photos. I LOVE Facebook timelines. I can never have enough of them!! <3

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Oh my goodness – you are adorable!  Thank you so much for being a part of our blog today.  Let’s start off by having you tell us a little about yourself and your business:

BECKY:  My very first job was working in a photo lab and a perk of this job was getting camera equipment at a discount so I bought my first camera and off I went with my friends on our first little photo shoot that weekend.  My colleague who developed the film happened to be getting married that summer and when she saw the roll she asked me to shoot her wedding, that was over 11 years ago and the rest, as they say, is history.  Over the years my business has evolved from shooting weddings and a little bit of everything else in the summers while I was going to University (I have a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Marketing) to specializing in families as they grow.

Photo 1

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Wonderful!  I started out in a little photo lab as well!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Tell us – What is your absolute FAVORITE thing to shoot?

BECKY:  Hands down, my favorite thing to shoot is children!  I LOVE their pure innocence, how they are not embarrassed to show their true emotions in front of the camera.  From giggles with their eyes squeezed shut to pensive moments and great big smiles they are all moments that deserve to be captured on camera.

Photo 2Photo 3

PRAIRIE SWEET:  What do you shoot for fun?

BECKY:  I love to plan themed sessions!  So many different things inspire me and these sessions are really a chance for me to make the visions that live in my day dreams a reality.

Photo 4Photo 5Photo 6

PRAIRIE SWEET:  You do such a great job with your themed shoots!  They look like a lot of fun!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  What’s the BEST thing you’ve ever done for your business?

BECKY:  The best thing I’ve ever done for my business is learning to say no.  In the beginning I felt like success meant being busy, even if that meant shooting things I was not passionate about.  In the last couple of years I have really cut back on the shoots I didn’t want to be shooting to make time to shoot the stuff I love.   It’s an ongoing goal for me to continue to work on finding clients who share my vision rather than people who are just looking for a photographer.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Smart!  I think a lot of photographer struggle with the saying no part.  Love your last line about finding clients that share your vision as opposed to clients who just a need a photographer.

Photo 7

PRAIRIE SWEET:  We love getting to know you better.  Would you please tell us a little about your most memorable session/client?:

BECKY:  My most memorable client is one of the first clients I worked with when I took the plunge into child photography.  A friend of my sisters has three little girls and I asked if I could borrow her daughters for a little photo shoot.  I have continued to take photos of these girls ever since and it is so special to me to see how they have grown and matured in front of my camera!  These three little ladies have become confident little models and superstars on my blog!  I hope their photos always help them see how beautiful and unique each one of them is.

Photo 8Photo 9

PRAIRIE SWEET:  These girls are adorable!!!  Love your styled shoots here!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  We love to ask photogs to share some business tips – Please share with us your TOP 3 TIPS for how to BOOST YOUR SALES/BUSINESS:

BECKY:

·       Use Facebook!  I always try to tease at least one picture as soon as I get home from a session.  If I can share something that the client loves soon after their session they will start to love their images before they even see their gallery.

·       Share your inspired ideas with your clients! One summer I decided to be brave and started sharing ideas and inspiration with my clients and to my surprise they got excited about them!  The more I started showing those sessions on my blog the more clients starting asking me for my ideas and input into their sessions.

·       Be yourself!  I recently had my website re-designed and I really focused on making sure my brand and my website represented my personality and gave my clients and potential clients a peek into who I am.  My super talented hubby made a PROMO VIDEO for me and I stepped in front of the camera for a change to give people the chance to “meet” me before they booked a session with me.  In a market with countless children’s photographers the one thing that was truly unique to my business was ME.

Photo 10

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Great tips!  We could talk in length about each one but what I really want to say is CUUUUUTE Video {BE SURE TO WATCH IT}!!  and yes, the most unique feature in your business is YOU – great point.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Would you please  also share with us your TOP 3 TIPS for how to PAMPER YOUR CLIENTS?:

BECKY:

·       Wrap it up pretty!  I want my clients to feel like they’re getting a present when they receive their images so I love to find and design great packaging!

·       Make sure your clients have a great time at their session!  If they leave feeling like they had a great time those good feelings will translate to their photos when they see them!  Photo shoots can be stressful for parents; I always do my best to make sure parents leave feeling great about the session!

·       Throw in extras!  I sell a lot of digital packages and I love to throw in a few extra images – just as a little treat when they check out their USB:)

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Packaging is big – and I’m glad you mentioned making sure clients and having a great time DURING their session as well – it truly is an experience.

B2 Photography

PRAIRIE SWEET:  We’ve enjoyed getting to know you today.  We curious – what is your next photography/business/personal related goal?

BECKY:  Just one??  I am so goal oriented and have a list of many goals in front of me at any given time.  I think it’s really important to keep on learning how to make my business better so I would love to do some mentoring next year with one of my photographic heroes.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Best of luck with your business!  Congratulations on your success and THANK YOU so much for being a part of our blog today.

Remembering 9/11/2001

Today, all of us here in the United States are taking a moment to remember where we were 12 years ago. We remember the lives that were taken and the many courageous men and women who served in the following days to save so many.

We would love it if you could leave a comment letting us know where you were that day.

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” –Nelson Mandela

emma - I was working for an airline in the UK at this time. We heard about the attacks at around 2.15 PM and were all in disbelief. My husband (long-distance boyfriend back then) is American and was living in CT but his father worked in the city. I tried desperately to get hold of them and it was hours before I heard that they were safe and well. A lot of people at my company (my husband included – he worked for them in the US office) lost their jobs soon after but it didn’t matter much because so many others had lost so much more. My husband proposed soon after (seize the day gesture!) and I moved to the states in 2003 where we were married and have been living happily ever since.

Miller’s Professional Imaging Vendor Feature & Giveaway | Photo Lab

Welcome to Prairie Sweet Boutique’s ‘MAKE IT SWEET’ BLOG!  We are dedicated to helping photographers BOOST SALES (by offering great products!) and PAMPER CLIENTS (with a great experience!).

We are so excited to feature MILLER’S PROFESSIONAL IMAGING aka “MILLER’S” on our blog today!   We’ll have some fun getting to know a little bit more about the fabulous MIDWEST lab – located in our home state of Kansas!  Stay tuned for our BIGGEST GIVEAWAY yet!  We’ve got some great items from Miller’s and a HUGE Giveaway from yours truly…just wait…we’d say “epic” but that might sound cliche – but it IS…

Please welcome MILLER’S!

INTERVIEW:

PRAIRIE SWEET:   Welcome!  We are thrilled to have John Rank, the head of Miller’s Product Development department, with us today!  We are big fans of your branding & products and can’t wait to get to know more about Miller’s!  Let’s get started with a little bit of background info on the company:

MILLER’S:  It all started with one great man, Bill Miller, in a little lab above his studio in Pittsburg, Kansas back in 1964. Seeing the potential for growth, Bill constructed a 3,900 square foot lab in 1968, and twelve building expansions later, the Pittsburg facility is now 127,000 feet in size. As film moved to digital and needs increased, a second state-of-the-art 40,000 square feet facility was built in Columbia, Missouri in 2001.

We’re definitely known for the quality of our prints and other photo products. And we’ve recently launched exciting new products, like the Custom Wood USB Box and Drives, and the Miller’s Signature Album. But we like to think it’s the little things that differentiate us, like a phone call from customer service to alert a customer of misspelling on a card or that the image on an album cover is not wrapping properly. Our mindset is to check the products that come through as if we were going to buy it ourselves. Plus it doesn’t do anyone any good to send an incorrect product out the door.

Miller’s Columbia, MO facility

Miller’s Pittsburgh, KS Facility

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Thank you for sharing about your company.  Customer Service is definitely key – we always appreciate the prompt and dedicated service.  It’s nice to know we have someone double-checking our work and willing to go the extra mile to help us fix our mistakes – thank you!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  So besides running a successful professional lab, what do you do for fun?

MILLER’S:  There is no doubt – we work hard around here. But we make time for play, too. There’s usually some fun event or contest planned each month. Like the foot race and egg race between production departments for braggin’ rights or the print contest for lab credit. Not to mention, our Christmas party is notoriously a good time.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Come on – WHERE are the pictures the of the egg races??  ;)  Ha.  It’s great to hear that you can have fun and still get the job done.  Looks like a fun work environment and great crew.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Please tell us, what’s the BEST thing you’ve ever done for your business?

MILLER’S:  To instill a mindset of constant change and to never be satisfied with our performance – there’s always room for improvement.  No matter what area of the business or in what department, from product development to shipping, working with this mindset in place pushes us to continuously question what we do and how we do it, resulting in a better end product and experience for our customers.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Nice.  That’s an excellent business strategy to continue to stay ahead of the curve and to keep the momentum on your side.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Photographers are always looking for ways to increase their bottom line.  Please share with us your TOP TIPS  for how to BOOST YOUR SALES/BUSINESS:

MILLER’S:

1. Get to know your clients personally. Meet with them once before their session, find out their interests, likes and dislikes.  Have clients use Pinterest to share information about themselves, their style and what they like to do for fun. Taking the extra time to discover these things will help you cultivate a session in which they are comfortable – which helps create images they’ll love and want to buy – which means more sales for you and a return customer.  It’s a win-win!

2. Invest in yourself. Keep up on industry trends and hot new products. Make time to hone your technique and enhance your software skills. The photography business is ever evolving and changing. Those who don’t embrace this and change with it will see the impact on the success and longevity of their business.

3. Choose the right products for your client base. Know your clients and then cater your product offerings to their preferences. For instances, senior clients historically have trouble choosing just a few images to print. In this case, offer an Accordion Book, which has seven customizable panels so they get all the images they love.  Plus, Accordion Books make it easy for seniors and parents to share those images with family and friends and offer an ideal gift for grandparents.

Miller’s 4×8 Accordion Albums

Miller’s Mini Accordion Books

4. Market your business. Build a website (Miller’s Storefront powered by Zenfolio is a great option for this). Then use products like Signature Letterpress Business Cards, Luxe DVD Cases, Sell Sheets and Stickers, to create a consistent image for your brand. Because a professional appearance only enhances the value of your work.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Loads of WONDERFUL tips – thank you!  Tip #2 is especially critical and Tip #3 is definitely an area in which we focus with our design templates.   We carry several accordion album designs and will be reviewing Miller’s 4×8 Accordion Albums later in this post.   Most clients have no idea what they want until they SEE it – that’s our job – to choose some great stuff – and SHOW it to them.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Speaking to the need to take care of our customers, please share with us your TOP TIPS for how to PAMPER YOUR CLIENTS:

MILLER’S:

1. Reward your best clients. Treat awesome clients to goodies they don’t expect to show them how much you appreciate their business. This would be above and beyond anything included in their package. Throw in three Accordion Mini books for them to pass out to family. Include your favorite image of a newly wedded couple in a Luxe Frame. These options are affordable for you and will go a long way in making your clients feel special.

2. Send all clients a thank you note. Whether you treat them to a client gift or not, sending a thank you note to all clients is a must! Never underestimate the power of a hand-written note, plus this puts you top of mind next time your clients need photography.  Use a Folded Card with your studio branding on front and then room for your note inside.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Great advice once again!  It is obvious that the people of Miller’s truly understand the photographer’s world and what is essential for success.  Thank you notes are a MUST and unexpected gifts go a long way to make your clients feel special.  We feel so strongly about pampering your clients that we have a whole section of our store dedicated to Client Gift Ideas.   Don’t skip this critical step!

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Can you give us a little hint of what is to come for/from Miller’s?

MILLER’S:  We have several new products coming out, or were released recently, that we’re thrilled to be bringing to our photographer family, including:

Luxe Pop Cards {COMING SOON!} – For clients who want a holiday card that, well, POPS! This 5×7 card has one of two perforated shapes, either ornate or circle, to double as both a greeting and then an ornament once the center shape is popped out.

Miller’s Luxe Pop Cards

Custom Wood USB Box and Drives – Add class and sophistication to image presentation with this new addition. Made of a classic maple wood for a modern look, your custom image or logo can be applied directly to the body and cap of the USB, as well as the top cover of the Box. USB Drives come in a Classic rectangle or Luxe ornate shape.

Miller’s USB Box & Drive

Miller’s Signature Album – Our best album yet continues to receive rave reviews – and we have plans to give fans of the album even more to love. So stay tuned for some stellar additions to the line early 2014!

Miller’s Signature Album

Miller’s Signature Album – Inside

PRAIRIE SWEET:  So exciting!  We’re reviewing the USB Boxes & Drives as well as the GORGEOUS Miller’s Signature Album today and have several Album Design Templates that would be gorgeous for this type of album!  Stay Tuned!

THANK YOU so much for being a part of our blog today!  We appreciate all of your insightful and pertinent answers!  If our readers didn’t learn anything – they just weren’t paying attention.:)  We welcome you back any time and get wait to see what you come up with next.

PRODUCT REVIEWS:

We love giving our readers insider information – the TRY IT before you BUY IT kind of good info.

Today we’re reviewing several items from Miller’s Lab:

But first – a little overview of Miller’s.

Miller’s is a great mid-western company built on honest values putting the customer’s needs at the top of their list.  They have built an incredible brand that is set to keep up with the industry as it evolves.  We love their style and overall branding.

ORDERING:  Miller’s truly has one of the BEST websites of all the major photo labs.   Navigation is pretty intuitive as you quickly find the item you are looking for.  Their site has lots of up to date photos of their products helping us getting a better sense for the specs of said products.   They keep their product line fresh by continually adding to their collection.

SHIPPING:  Another GREAT feature  – They ship pretty much everything OVERNIGHT for FREE {with minimum $10 order – $15 minimum on Press, Sports & Events and Schools Orders}.  Items are packaged very well – no shifting or issues there.

OTHER:  Miller’s has several great features on their site – {go look around}, including a storefront powered by Zenfolio as well as lots of educational materials to help you do better at what you do.

PRICING:  Miller’s has competitive pricing – you may pay a touch more for some of the basics like 8x10s and 5x7s but you quickly see the value when your items are shipped OVERNIGHT!  They also have a fairly low minimum order requirement of only $10 and offer great sales from time to time.

Now for the review of Miller’s Products:

1. Miller’s Custom USB Box & Drive:

One of Miller’s newest products is their Custom Wood USB Box and Drives.

First, the Custom Wood USB BOX:  The box is a 4.5 x 4.5 x 1.625 square wooden box made from unvarnished blond wood.  It has a top that slides open/out.  The box comes with an aspen wood wool filler that is wrapped separately and sits nicely in the box to provide some protection for your Custom Wood USB Drive.

The 4.5 x 4×5 slide out portion of the lid is fully customizable! – our favorite feature!  You can easily fit this into your brand by adding your logo, etc.  OR, simply make each box a one of a kind piece.  Have a high school senior who orders your digital collection?  Give him or her a customized USB Box and Drive with THEIR picture and perhaps a few design elements {& your logo of course}.  These boxes would be perfect for any client who orders a digital product or collection or as a gift to a great client – including a digital slideshow or gallery of their session images.  Think wedding.  Think baby.  Think senior for sure.

Note:  Any ‘WHITE’ in your images will not be printed but will instead show the natural woodgrain instead – sort of a cool feature that gives it even more of a natural feel.

Next, the Custom Wood USB DRIVE:  Miller’s offers TWO different shapes for Custom Wood USB Drives – Classic or Luxe.  We opted for the LUXE option – just because it seemed fun.

Sizes:  Classic:  1.125 x 2.375   Luxe:  1.375 x 2.560

You can also choose either an 8GB drive or a 16 GB drive.

You can print your logo and/or background on one side of the drive.  Again, any ‘WHITE’ will instead be the natural wood grain showing through.

For our sample we chose to put our logo on the large size and one of our signature papers on the other.  The Custom Wood USB Drive is a nice thickness and weight – definitely a sturdy little piece with a nice hand feel.  When you open the drive you have two separate pieces that will go back together very nicely because of some mighty little magnets they use to hold it all together.

Overall, Miller’s Custom Wood USB Boxes and Drives are a great way to take your business branding to the next level.  Giving your clients something unique and custom, especially when done well, is a key way to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack and boost your professionally polished brand.  A nice product.

2.  Miller’s SIGNATURE Album.

Chances are if you’re even remotely up to date with the various products in the industry – you’ve heard of the New Miller’s Signature Albums.  This new album offering has taken Miller’s Albums to a whole other level.  I have to say when I opened the box and started to see the album in person – I was saying things like “Oh my goodness” and “Gorgeous!” out loud.  This album lives up to the hype and does not disappoint.

Features:   When ordering a Miller’s Signature Album – you have LOTS of options – Everything from thin or thick pages to square or rounded corners, number of pages, several sizes and paper options not to mention all of your cover material options.  You can even get some gilding if you’d like!

Oh, and GET THIS – Each album comes with a BOX!  This was a nice surprise.  The box is a sturdy textured bookcloth covered box – they call it a Modern Graphite box.

Also – A really nice touch – Miller’s included a nicely designed unbranded care card to include with your client’s album.  {see pic}

Our Sample:

We chose to review a 10×10 Miller’s Signature Album with 10 page spreads, Panorama {pages are mounted flush and extend across the entire spread – no split at spine}, Custom cover image {Fuji Pearl Paper}, Classic Felt press paper, Thick square pages, White End Leafs using our 10×10 Simply Sweet Volume 1 Album.

PAPER TYPES:  Choose between E-Surface Paper (photographic paper), Fuji Pearl Paper or Classic Felt.

COVER OPTIONS:  While we went with a custom photo cover, Miller’s also offers several other options including an acrylic photo cover, printed metal photo cover or standard leather.  They also offer foil stamping and embossing to add an extra touch of customization.

Overall, we really liked the Classic Felt Paper (slightly soft to the touch – like a book) and VERY thick.  You can see in our sample image that we put a nickel next to the page to show for comparison so you can see just how thick these pages are.  We also really liked that we had the option to get white end leafs and that the page edges were white as well.  This went really nicely with our Simply Sweet Album Design Template.  This is a VERY nice quality album!

3. Miller’s 4×8 Accordion Books

We chose two different samples so we could review paper choices.

4×8 Accordion Books are one of our FAVORITE products from Miller’s.  We offer several 4×8 Accordion Album Templates in our shop and they are quite popular!  These books/albums are perfect for high school Seniors – as either a gift for each set of grandparents, a brag book for mom {which will fit in her purse}, or as a starter or gift album!

FEATURES:  Each book/album is a nice long rectangle – 4 inches wide by 8 inches long which makes for a nicely sized starter or gift album.  The albums come with a good strength magnetic closure – the album will stay closed when you want it to!  Accordion books/albums are a fun way to get a press printed book/album with some bang for your buck.  They are quite affordable but still offer your clients a way to have/display several photos.

For our first Album we have a 4×8 Accordion Book using our Sunshine 4×8 Accordion Album Template.   This album features a Fuji Pearl Cover, optional Inside Cover Image (we like it – more pics & design!), with Bamboo Paper and a Frosted Slip Cover (a couple of bucks extra but worth it in our opinion).

We like the feel and look of the Fuji Pearl cover {a fairly new option}.  It is smooth and shiny and also feels a little less vulnerable to scuffs, spills, etc.  The Bamboo paper is great!  It’s one of the thicker papers Miller’s offers which is great for this type of product because it will not only hold up well but also helps the book to be displayed standing open.

For our second Album we have a 4×8 Accordion Book using our Doodle Fresh Senior Accordion Album template.  This album features a Satin Cover, optional Inside Cover Image, Pearl Paper – and a frosted slip cover.

We’re kind of digging the Satin cover.  It has a more of a matte feel over the Fuji pearl.  The pearl paper for the accordion insert is a nice thickness and sheen – not too shiny but a pretty shimmer.

NOTE:  If we did these samples over again – we would order the Fuji Pearl cover with pearl paper on the inside too.  The satin cover and pearl paper just don’t go as well together.  Luckily, Miller’s offers several paper types (like classic felt, premium cotton, art recycled, etc that would work much better.  User error in this case… :)  Now that we know how nice the classic felt paper is (see signature album review), we’d probably get the Satin cover with with classic felt or premium cotton paper.  That would be a GREAT combo!

Overall, we LOVE Miller’s Accordion Books!  They are truly a great product at a tremendous value!  If you haven’t tried one yet – you really should.   Maybe try one out as a client gift and see how you like it.  See our selection of Accordion Album Templates in our shop.

4.  Miller’s 5×7 Flat Press Printed Cards.

It’s no secret.   Our BIGGEST selling items at Prairie Sweet Boutique are our card templates!  We have everything from Holiday Card Templates (just launched our 2013 Holiday Card Collection a few weeks ago in fact – and it’s on Sale! so check it out!), Save the Date Cards Templates, Birth Announcement Card Templates and more.  Because we sell so many card templates, we are always trying to keep up with the product offerings from various pro photo labs.  We are especially interested in the types of papers each company offers and how they coordinate with our designs.

Miller’s offers several different press paper options:  Classic Felt, Premium Cotton, Premium Bamboo, 100% Recycled, Smooth, Linen, or Pearl press papers

For this review, we have chosen 4 different templates using four different types of press printed paper options from Miller’s:  Premium Cotton, Classic Felt, Smooth, and Pearl.  {Psst…spoiler alert…Want to know our favorite…it’s the Premium Cotton!}

Card #1 is from our Watercolor Winter Holiday Card Collection and features Miller’s Premium Cotton paper.  LOVE LOVE LOVE this paper.  The matte, soft textured finish goes so well with the natural design and watercolor elements of this card.  It has a great hand feel and softness to it and is also a very nice thick card.

Card #2 is from our Brown Paper Packages Holiday Card Collection and features Miller’s Classic Felt paper.  This is a nice thick cardstock with more of a smooth surface feel.  There is an ever so slight sheen to the photo and colored elements of the design which helps to add richness to the colors.

Card #3 is from our Kid-Drawn Christmas Card Collection  {yes, ACTUALLY Kid-Drawn!} and features Miller’s Smooth paper.  We wanted to review more of a standard paper so we could tell you what we think!  Having ordered at least one flimsy set of “standard smooth” press printed cards from another company a long while back, we quickly learned that not all smooth papers are alike.  While the Smooth paper is slightly thinner than the Premium Cotton and the Classic Felt, it still has a decent weight to it.  It also has more of a semi-gloss sheen that does make the colors on this fun design pop a little more.

Card #4 if from our Nativity Holiday Card Collection and features Miller’s Pearl paper.  Again the Pearl paper has a good weight to it while having a pearl sheen/shimmer and nice smooth finish.  So many people love pearl paper because it brings out colors and is pretty with the sheen/shimmery look.  In general, we prefer some of the thicker natural materials – but honestly – that is simply a personal choice or a choice to make depending on your client and the template/photo you are using.  In other words, we like the Pearl but we LOVE the Premium Cotton.  It is nice to have so many great options!

We get a lot of questions about paper thicknesses – which can be hard to describe or photograph – so we did a little side by side comparison here with the stacks of 25 cards.   We put the cards in order from thickest to thinnest.  Here is the order:

1. Premium Cotton

2. Classic Felt

3. Pearl

4. Smooth

Overall, the card samples we received from Miller’s looked good!  They have several nice paper options and the colors are good too!

We hope you’ve enjoyed our feature with Miller’s!  It’s so great to get to know the successful companies in our industry a little better.

Miller’s – Thank you again for your participation!  We appreciate you being here today and wish you all the best!

The customer service is BEYOND and OVER THE TOP. It is the main reason I have stayed with them. Once I erred in uploading a huge wedding album. Laura Winslow Photogrpahy | Photography Feature & Giveaway

HELLO!

We are so excited to feature the wonderful Laura Winslow from Laura Winslow Photography today!!

Laura Winslow Photography has such a cheerful, colorful, full of life vibe!  Her affinity and talent for photographing children is quite evident in her glorious body of work.  We are privileged to share Laura’s work and business insights with you today.  Grab your tissues – you may need them.  Also, be sure to check out our GIVEAWAY below.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Hello Laura!  Welcome to our Make it Sweet Blog!  We’re so happy to have you with us today.  To get started, please tell us a little about yourself and your business:

LAURA WINSLOW:  I have had quite the variety of life experiences thus far, the most recent being photography.  I majored in World Politics and Spanish in college, and interned on Capitol Hill and with the U.S. Department of State. I’ve moved 17 times, so travel is in my blood–my goal was to become a Foreign Service Officer with the State Department, but life sometimes takes us on a wonderful unplanned ride. I taught high school Spanish for 7 years prior to becoming a mother. When our son was born very sick, he was unable to be around other children, so I stayed home with him. Around that time, my husband gifted me with my first DSLR and I spent my days practicing on my son, much like countless other photographers. My style of photography–modern, fresh and colorful, is definitely a reflection of who I am. I see the world in color and try to infuse that into my photography.  I very much appreciate black and white imagery, but I instantly see in layers of colors and tones. I photograph primarily children, families, maternity, newborn and senior sessions.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  What a neat and diverse background you have!  Thanks for sharing.  You can definitely see your love of color evident in your images – so cheerful and fun to look at.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  In regards to photography, what is your favorite thing to shoot?:

LAURA WINSLOW:  By far, my passion is photographing children. I love the innocence, the pureness of emotion and playfulness. As a mother, I know how quickly each moment and stage passes. Those little looks, the way they toddle or run everywhere or love stairs or rocks–those are the things that you will want to remember as the years pass.  A close second would be photographing maternity sessions, especially those expecting their first baby.  To capture a woman in this most beautiful of times–perhaps to make her see the beauty she possesses when she doesn’t feel it is a special honor.  I love seeing a woman transform emotionally from expectant first-time mother to new mother at the newborn session. There is something so raw and real about it.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Aww…love that!  It is so true that every stage goes by so quickly.  You do a wonderful job capturing those special moments/stages/expressions.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  What do you shoot for fun?:

LAURA WINSLOW:  Unfortunately, I don’t do enough of this. I find little time left to photograph for fun. To me, sometimes fun is leaving my camera at home and just using my phone!:)When I do have time, I love to capture my children just doing what they do–nothing too formal or planned. I want to have images of our best memories–those of our everyday lives.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  I think most photographers can relate!!  Sooo many iphone photos!  Love that you make time to just catch your children just being themselves.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Please tell us – What’s THE BEST thing you’ve ever done for your business?:

LAURA WINSLOW:  One of the best things I have ever done for my business is to make the decision early on to make custom, upscale packaging as part of my client presentation and experience. It is so important to spend money on packaging, to really put thought into it and to make it an extension of your brand, to spoil your clients with luxury. They are special, make them feel like it. Deliver your images in a way that makes them want to come back again and again–like a little Christmas in a box! There are so many fabulous ways to use templates to customize your client offerings–from Image Boxes, custom cards and accordion albums. Utilize templates to design a beautiful experience for your clientele.

PRAIRIE SWEET!  We couldn’t agree more!   Your packaging is an important extension of your art/branding/personality – don’t disappoint!  Prairie Sweet has many templates that photographers love to incorporate into their packaging and client gifts.  You can check out these templates here – PRAIRIE SWEET BOUTIQUE CLIENT GIFT TEMPLATES

PRAIRIE SWEET:  We’d love to get to know you even more.  Would you tell us a little about your most memorable session/client?:

LAURA WINSLOW:  I like to think that all of my sessions are memorable in some way or another as each family or person has a story or something special about them–I love meeting new people. One of my sessions that sticks out to me, though, is when I had the opportunity to photograph our neighbors, a family of four with two little boys. Their youngest little guy was two and about six months prior he was diagnosed with Batten Disease, a rare genetic disorder. Less than three months after our session, sweet Broxton passed away. To photograph a family knowing that these images meant so much more than just an ordinary family photo shoot was overwhelming. The Taylors are so strong and full of love for one another, and I hope I was able to capture some small part of that for them to always have among their countless memories of little Broxton. (Read more about Broxton and about Batten Disease here : http://bit.ly/yccfuG )

PRAIRIE SWEET:  I hope everyone will take time to read this touching story and tribute to Broxton.  I’m sure they will cherish the gift you gave them forever.  Bless his sweet soul.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Changing gears a little bit.  We love to give our readers ideas to help them improves their SALES.  Would you mind sharing with us your TOP 3 TIPS for how to BOOST YOUR SALES/BUSINESS:

LAURA WINSLOW:

1. Offer your clients beautiful products that further enhance your images and serve as keepsakes.

2. Offer custom touches that they probably cannot do themselves–custom cards, canvas collages.

3. Provide clients with ideas and resources for how they can display their images–get them dreaming of that large gallery wall in their living room before you even present them with their images.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  These are great tips!  Each one could be discussed in great detail.  It’s so important to truly provide a service by guiding them with their choices and providing the products they will treasure.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Along these lines, please share with us your TOP 3 TIPS for how to PAMPER YOUR CLIENTS:

LAURA WINSLOW:

1. Package their orders in a way that makes them absolutely giddy to open it up–beautiful, professional and indulgent.

2. Guide your clients through the wardrobe and styling process prior to your session. Provide them with resources and visuals–make it a less stressful part of the experience.

3. Include an unexpected gift with their order–whether it is a sweet treat, candle, lotion, a custom calendar or accordion albums, be thoughtful of and thankful for them.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  Note to all – READ these tips over and over again and implement! – do not underestimate the power of creating a wonderful EXPERIENCE for your clients.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  We’d love to know what is in store for Laura Winslow & Laura Winslow Photography!  What is your next photography/business/personal related goal?

LAURA WINSLOW:  I am a dreamer–my mind is forever racing with new ideas and projects, so it is hard to narrow it down and discuss just one goal.  I have been thinking of offering in-person workshops for some time, so I hope to begin offering them in the near future once every little detail is perfectly planned for the most amazing experience.

PRAIRIE SWEET:  We wish you the best in all of your endeavors.  We’re sure your workshops will be well-received!  THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing your insights and images with us today!
