Damn, the Gatekeeper is like a cross between the Cryptkeeper from the ’72 Tales from the Crypt movie and Sargent Hartman from Full Metal Jacket!

This was a great review, I’d like to see more of this and less of your movie reviews (the ones that involve current boxoffice). Maybe it’s time to step back and look at your earlier stuff as to not forget why your fans joined you in the first place.

I’ve actually played through Atmosfear (third from the bottom of your stack) once during a party, and I totally agree that the game is far better for a laugh than it is for the scare value. Although I will say that the gatekeeper’s makeup and overall appearance got a lot better from this one to the one I played. Also, it was a DVD, which allowed it to mix things up. Still not something I’d play again unless I could find some new friends to have a laugh with. Awesome review, and hope you don’t take too long cleaning the Black ‘ole.

Also awesome choice with the Super Castlevania music.

Man, Spoony is really in love with the Evil Dead 3 soundtrack. He’s used that song in everything slightly related to something Medieval in every video haha. I don’t blame him, it is really awesome.

Excellent review, Spoony. As I put in a comment when you announced reviewing this game, I got hold of a copy from a charity shop for £1.25 (UK-siders, GO TO CHARITY SHOPS! You never know what bargains you’ll find! As well as Atmosfear, I got a Star Wars VHS board game too). A couple of the keys are missing, and 3 of the numbers, but everything else is still there. I, like you, read through some of the cards, and there was one that says while the Old One is rolling its age, the player holding the card has to distract the Old One by asking when they were born and what age they are, which would hold the game up even further. Excellent review, Spoony. As I put in a comment when you announced reviewing this game, I got hold of a copy from a charity shop for £1.25 (UK-siders, GO TO CHARITY SHOPS! You never know what bargains you’ll find! As well as Atmosfear, I got a Star Wars VHS board game too). A couple of the keys are missing, and 3 of the numbers, but everything else is still there. I, like you, read through some of the cards, and there was one that says while the Old One is rolling its age, the player holding the card has to distract the Old One by asking when they were born and what age they are, which would hold the game up even further. Major props to the GateCleaner at the end, absolutely hilarious and you sounded just like the Gatekeeper.

I remember getting Atmosfear for my birthday, but I never got around to playing it.

Oh and by the way Spoony I hope you’re able to clean the Black Hole better than I was. I was down there for three weeks trying to clean the crusty black crap off the walls and floor, and the cleaning supplies they gave me were crap. I mean really, they gave me some Orange Glow and a crappy toothbrush that looked like it had been used Gorgo the Bog monster.

hahaha, loved it. The back and forth between you and the Gatekeeper was awesome. Can’t wait to see more Nightmare/Atmosfear reviews. I actually really like the DVD one, since the format allows for a bit more flexibility in gameplay. I remembered when I was a kid, I would never want to be the youngest playing Nightmare because one point he intentionally singles that player out and scares them. Jerk..

P.S. When we played it any part that said roll until you get a number, the person just kept rolling over and over till they got the number. Also 2 half keys made one key. Ah yes, I remember those games. Used to go to a mate’s house to play them all the time. The second game was Baron Samedi who tells you to shout “YO BARON, I CAN DIG IT!” every time he asks. The third is a witch and the one after that was the vampire. Then they moved onto the Harbingers.

Still, it was some pretty good times we had.

Nice review Spoony, I use to own Nightmare when I was a kid, and only played it once with two other friends. It was ok but we never had any reason to play it again, in fact we never even finish the tape the first time around. I didn’t know there other later versions of the game, I guess it was kind of popular.

Great use of the Gatekeeper, it’s like seeing an old friend from your childhood again….a crazy friend who yelled at you a lot, threw you into the blackhole all the time, and ate your Cheetos.

I just about pissed myself laughing when the gatekeeper SKRONKed!

Without a doubt one of your best reviews EVER, though I do find each review seems to improve on the last, and this one was no different. I loved the battle/dialogue between Spoony and the Gatekeeper, Lee’s cameo, the revision to the intro (especally the clip from the Alone in the Dark review) and the Gatecleaner (I agree with others who thinks he should appear from time to time)! Can’t wait to see what’s next!

I did not like Lee’s cameo. While I like Still Gaming, I do not enjoy seeing Lee interupt other reviewers. It just does not work for me. I have enjoyed your other crossovers, but this is pushing it. There are a ton of crossover reviews on TGWTG and it’s starting to wear thin. (If you do a crossover with Matthew Buck of Film Brain, I think the part of me that likes you will die.)

You failed to answer my one burning question. How do you make an interactive game with a VHS tape? They do not have tracks like a CD, so it could not have been like T.R.A.X. How did it work? This really detracts from the review. It was funny, but the review is incomplete.

The conversation with the Gatekeeper was hilarious. I thought it was so funny. It seemed like he was responding to you. Good job.

I liked the Gatecleaner, but don’t use him too much. That character will get old fast. In fact, maybe he should only return in reviews of other Atmosfear games.

You know, that clip from Red Alert 3, looks an awful lot like Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars. I haven’t played Red Alert 3, but unless they kept both Billy Dee Williams and that other guy, and didn’t change the set or costumes at all, I think you may be mistaken, and that clip was from Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars.

so i noticed a lot of d&d books how long have you been playing. I just started playing when 4th edition came out, i am a 4th level elf ranger.

Video aside, this game is actually really underproduced. It looked really cool in the ads, but now that I’ve actually gotten a good look at it it’s just a blank gray slate of a board. There should be skulls and gnarled trees and bats and goblins and stuff all over that board, but all I see are rocks.

If your looking for a good FMV game, try Realms of the Haunting. It’s controll scheme is very old school but otherwise it’s an awsome game witch has ages considerabley well.

I actually liked nightmare a lot at the time I played it the first time (some 12 years ago). Now I was playing the Dutch version with a different actor, who was at least acting better, but I’ve played the main game and first expansion a few times and never got bored with it.

Anyway, I still liked the review, I always love to hear Spoony making fun of things I like (FF8 anyone?). Keep up the good work.

As great as it was to see knightmare in one of your reviews again I have to say I loved the Last Starfighter references. Every time I think I’m the only person to remember that film someone else mentions it, it must have been a lot more popular than I thought. Even though it still can’t get a Pal release over here.

As board games go this looks overly complex and as if too much of the effort went into scripting the video. Your right that there is practically no replay value in a game like this, unless you know the video backwards and cheat. I also think that confining the players to a video time limit doesn’t help. Several games, especially the longer ones, let you stop, record everything and then come back after a couple of days. This keeps the game fresh as doesn’t chain you to any time limit.
You can’t call sequels replay value, unless you have to carry charicters and equipment from one to the next. In which case they are expansions and practically worthless unless you get them all.
In summation great review of a game that encapsulates EVERYTHING that is wrong with 80s and 90s board gaming.

I guess the creators of this game didn’t like Rick Moranis in “Ghostbusters” because they certainly didn’t like the Keymaster. What is the point of having a sack of 50 key cards with only one opposite side in the bunch. I am wondering when Nightmare: Klingon Edition comes out. If that “Gatekeeper” is not a model for the Klingon played by Robert O’Reilly (better known as Gowron), then this Q continuum needs to end. Which brings up an interesting question: are they following an “Idiots Guide to Making Interactive Boardgames”? What’s next “Heros Interactive Board Game” or better yet a “My Name is Earl Interactive Board Gamet” where Jaime Pressly calls you a dummy and tells you that you have have been locked in a trailer again. Wouldn’t that be nice?

A FMV game that was actually really, really good is Klingon Academy. It serves as somewhat of a prologue for Star Trek VI, and has many of the Klingons featured in that film, including Christopher Plummer and David Warner. Maybe I’ll try to dig it up when I’m at my parents.

I wanted Nightmare so badly when I was younger, I seriously though it was based on the BBC show reviewed earlier. Nope, so thank god I didn’t get it.

also you said that they changed the name of the game coz of the tv show Knighmare, but the copy write on the card says 1991. Im very sure that the tv show “Knightmare” was long over by then and as a side note it was never shown on the BBC it was shown on the ITV network and was made by Anglia televison.

Ok,,,this is tough to admit but as a kid (around 8 or 9 years old) my friend brought this game over to my house to play and it scared the shit out of me. Every time that fucking gatekeeper came on the screen I’d piss myself. I hated the thunder clap that was used to startle people, because it worked so well!! I literally had to stop the game mid-way through, get up and go to my room to escape the noise and even then I was able to hear that damn clap and the gatekeeper yell, ”STOP!” through the wall………. I hated this game….

The GateKeeper kinda pulls off the creepy thing with what seems like children talking with him… but then he snorts?! What the hell?? Didn’t the directors just stop to look at the guy and ask “What the hell was that?”

I actually played Atmosphere (German version) many years ago. A friend got it for his birthday and so we went for it. It’s true: The game has no real replay value, but the one time we played it, it was actually fun. Mostly because we tried to make each other mess up our challenges. The staring contest was the most memorable one where we made faces and silly jokes to get the one who had the contest to blink. He made it though…so respect for that.
This being said, the game itself is neither scary nor particular entertaining. It can be a good laugh because of the sabotage attempts of the other players, but it certainly isn’t a recommendable purchase.

So all that remains to say for me is: “yes my Gate Cleaner, keep making Spoony review more of this!”

I had a look at the rules for the game, and instead of having the Gatekeeper telling you to ‘ANSWER ME!!!”, you have the Baron, a zombie. Whenever he comes on the screen and says “THRILL ME!!!”, you have to answer “YO BARON, I CAN DIG IT!” :D

I played this game… Well not the video version I played the DVD one… Atmosphere or whatever it got rid of most of the problems as it was a clever little dvd it knew what characters were playing and randomised when the gate keeper tunned up there was even a whiny speech he gave when you won =P

Wow what a lame board game. You just can’t use a video type to judge actions in a board game, as it would do the same thing every time. It makes no logical sense. I also don’t get why there are so many cards that do nothing.

After watching this video, I used the Nightmare video to play a 1-hour version of Nightmare Monopoly. It was amazing.
