Safety Reed Doughty said Wednesday he is “optimistic and hopeful” that he will be available to play for the Washington Redskins this weekend after missing one game because of a concussion.

“I’ll hopefully be able to practice today and we’ll see how that goes, and we’ll progress from there,” Doughty said at Redskins Park.

Doughty missed the Redskins’ loss last Sunday at Denver, a week after he suffered a concussion on a kickoff during a win over the Chicago Bears at FedEx Field. Under the NFL’s protocol for the treatment of a player who suffers a concussion, Doughty must be cleared by an independent neurologist to play Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.

“It’s always an ongoing protocol when you haven’t played in a game,” he said. “I’m feeling a lot better. But we’ll just have to see how it goes as the week goes on.”

Last week, Doughty participated in practices Wednesday and Thursday on a limited basis but didn’t practice Friday. The Redskins originally listed him as questionable on their official injury report Friday. But he didn’t accompany the team on its trip to Denver and on Saturday the Redskins announced he wouldn’t play.

“I felt I was close,” Doughty said. “But I didn’t recuperate enough to feel confident in putting myself in the game. And the doctors felt the same way and so we skipped it. …I was progressing. I just didn’t progress fast enough to be ready for the game. … It was one of those things that on Thursday I practiced and just decided I didn’t feel quite ready. I didn’t feel quite right.”
