Web firm expanding without outside cash
It's a story that by now has a familiar ring.
Two college buddies dream up an idea for a company that involves the Internet. They scrape up some capital and hang their shingle in a teeny office space on the outskirts of town.
Four years later, their revenue is pushing $5 million. They're still going to work in casual duds, but now they reside near the top floor of a downtown high-rise.
Today's e-business success story is Expidant LLC.
"We knew we weren't reinventing the wheel," said Steve MacLaughlin, co-founder of the Web-site design firm.
The trick was to meld the business models of an advertising agency and a technology services company, and do both functions well. And without major outside investors or venture capital.
"A lot of companies are not going to build a company like ours within their company," MacLaughlin said. "They've learned that the experts live outside their walls."
Technology pundits have only recently coined a term for what Expidnat does: "Internet integration."
