Uttam Kumar''s guru passes away



Kolkata, Feb 23 (PTI) Veteran classical vocalist Pandit Nidan Bandhu Banerjee, who had taught music to legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar, passed away today at his residence here, family sources said.

The 89-year-old was suffering from old-age related illness and is survived by four daughters and grandchildren.

The well-known voice trainer and prolific composer of his time was famous as the musical guru of ''Mahanayak'' Uttam Kumar.

Having hundreds of disciples, the revered Guru had also trained classical singer Dilshad Khan.

Banerjee''s musical width ranged from devotional dhrupad, romantic khayal to thrilling tappa.

Having spent his life trying to revive dhrupad, the maestro''s success as a khayal and tappa exponent had won him accolades, including the title of ''Rasaraj'' from the Bhawanipore Music Circle.
