Vote for the 50 Greatest X-Family Stories!

Last month, in honor of the X-Men’s 50th anniversary, we did a poll for the greatest X-Men stories of all-time. Enough of you, though, requested that we do a second poll for X-Men spinoffs like New Mutants, Wolverine, X-Factor, X-Force, etc. that I figured we might as well.

X-Men has been such a significant title that over the years its SPIN-OFFS have given us many great stories over the years, from one-shot issues to multi-issue stories to, well, sagas. So here you will be casting your vote for who you feel are the greatest X-Family stories!

You folks all vote in the comments section here up until 11:59 Pacific time, August 18th. I’ll tabulate all the votes and I’ll begin a countdown of the top 50 beginning August 21st.

Okay, here are the guidelines!

1. Vote in the comments section below, making sure to include that classic word “ACBC” somewhere in your comment so your vote will be marked invisible.

2. Vote for your TEN favorite X-Family stories.

3. Rank your ten stories from #1 (what you think is the greatest story) to #10 (what you think is the 10th greatest). I’d prefer it if you actually numbered your entry, #1-10. It’s easier for me to count. On that note, please also avoid listing them like this “1) 2) 3) 4),” because 8 with a ) after it transforms into a smiley face in the comments section (this one 8) ). Just plain ol’ “1. 2. 3.” works best. Really, just use this template:

4. Your top choice will be given 10 points, your second choice 9, etc.

5. What is the definition of a particular story? First off, runs are not stories. To wit, you can’t pick, say, Peter David’s first run on X-Factor and call it a story. It is not. That is a run made up of a bunch of different stories. Just like you can’t vote for Larry Hama and Marc Silvestri’s Wolverine run or Peter Milligan’s X-Statix run or Rick Remender’s Uncanny X-Force run. You have to vote for the individual stories that made up the run. When it comes to modern single stories, which are often collected in larger trades, try to vote for the single story first (like Re-X-Aminations in X-Factor #13) as best as you can.

6. Here is the trickiest part of the countdown. How do we count crossovers that involve the X-Men? Here’s how we will do it – you can’t vote for crossovers just by themselves if they include the X-Men. So no Age of Apocalypse or Mutant Massacre or Inferno, etc. However, you CAN vote for the individualized aspects of each of those crossovers, provided that they are not X-Men issues. Do you want to vote for the X-Factor issues of Fall of the Mutants? Go for it. Do you want to vote for the New Mutants issues of Mutant Massacre? Go for it. Do you want to vote for the X-Force issue of Fatal Attractions? Go for it. Do you want to vote for the X-Factor/Excalibur/X-Force Phalanx Covenant crossover? Go for it. Do you want to vote for Generation Next from Age of Apocaylpse? Go for it. The exceptions to this rule are crossovers that were too intertwined to be broken down. These crossovers include: X-Tinction Agenda, X-Cutioner’s Song, Messiah Complex and Second Coming.

7. Mini-series count as one story. Like Kitty Pryde and Wolverine or Havok and Wolverine: Meltdown.

8. Alpha Flight does not count.

9. Since none of Mike Carey’s X-Men Legacy stories made it on to the X-Men countdown, I will allow you to vote for X-Men Legacy stories on this countdown (both the Carey/Gage issues and obviously the current Si Spurrier series).

10. Special exception to the “no including X-Men issues” rule from the crossover rule above. You can vote for New Mutants Special Edition #1 and X-Men Annual #9 as one story. This only exists since I figure people will vote for New Mutants Special Edition #1 ANYways, so I might as well let them include the full story. Similarly, if you must include X-Men #160 in a vote for the Magik mini-series, so be it. The Wolverine mini-series stands on its own, though. I don’t care if Uncanny X-Men #172-173 are a direct sequel of the Wolverine mini-series. They’re separate stories.

11. Make sure to include ACBC in your ballot.

12. If you have questions and/or requests for clarification, feel free to ask them in the comments section below. If you’re unsure of something, probably better to ask BEFORE you vote. You have two weeks to vote, ya know?

13. I’ll list notable rulings in this section here as we go along:

A. Since just three people have voted for Deadpool stories, I’ll omit him from counting. For those three people who voted for Deadpool stories, just vote again (or not, it’s not a big deal, I can just eliminate your Deadpool vote).
B. Captain Britain’s solo run does not count, nor does Captain Britain and MI-13. If you already voted for Captain Britain stories, feel free to re-vote (or if you don’t feel like it, that’s fair enough. I can just eliminate the Captain Britain vote and bump everything else up on your list).
C. Excalibur does count.
D. Exiles counts
E. Sub-Mariner does not count.
F. Champions and New Defenders do not count.
G. I’ll count Dazzler.
H. Power Pack does not count.
I. A+X counts.
J. Crossovers between X-Family books and other Marvel books count, like X-Factor’s Hulk crossover or the New Mutants’ recent Journey into Mystery crossover.
K. X-23 counts
L. Daken counts
M. Runaways does not count.
N. Cloak and Dagger does not count.
O. Ka-Zar does not count.
P. No on War of Kings.
Q. X-Factor #87 (X-Aminations) is one story. If you want to vote for the follow-up issue in Peter David’s second X-Factor run, you have to vote for it separately.
R. I’ll count New X-Men #20-31 as one story “Childhood’s End.”
S. Enemy of the State is one story.
T. Longshot can count.
U. Solo stories in Marvel Comics Presents counts.

Remember, please include the following word: ACBC – on your ballot. It will make it so your ballot appears invisible to other readers, so only I can read it (and count your vote secretly).
