It was a scene that neighbors called surreal.  First responders went further. Saying the scene was. In their words, horrible.

A toddler is dead, literally torn apart by the family pet.

It happened at about 1:30 Wednesday afternoon.  The boy's mother was home with the 2 year old child and the family dog, said by neighbors to be a pit bull that they've owned for more than eight years.

"The mother went to the restroom," says Fulton County Police Detective Melissa Parker.  "When she came out, she says, her son was clearly deceased."

The mother called 911 but it was too late.

The mother and the boy's body was recovered from the home while Fulton County Animal Control worked to keep the dog contained in one room of the house.

Animal handlers were finally able to remove the animal.  It's being kept at animal control for observation as a determination of its fate is made.

Joseph Massam is a neighbor who didn't see the attack but heard it.  He ran outside to find out what the commotion was all about and saw the mother lying on the front lawn with blood on her hands.

"My wife used to watch the boy, for about five or ten minutes, every other day," he says.  "All I know about them was that they were church going people.  That's all."

Parker says investigators are looking into the nature of the attack, but says there is no doubt about what happened.

"The nature of the injuries?  Yes.  They are consistent with a dog attack. Yes."
