ASNE welcomes new staff member

We are happy to announce that Jiyoung Won has joined ASNE as our communications coordinator. Her first day was Sept. 9.

Jiyoung says that among her work experience, the internship in 2011-12 at The Associated Press in Seoul, South Korea, stands out. Working as a news assistant for eight months, she learned hands-on journalism and experienced the fast-paced working environment often associated with a wire news service. Her main duties included doing research on North Korea and providing the information to the bureau chief for her extensive coverage on the country, interviewing sources and contributing to stories written by the staff, writing briefs and attending press conferences.

First Amendment

Since its founding in 1922, ASNE has been a fierce advocate for First Amendment freedoms and open government. Every year, we help organize 1 for All's Free to Tweet scholarship program, a two-week competition where high schoolers tweet about the First Amendment. Five winning tweets are chosen annually, and each winner receives a $5,000 college scholarship. We also sponsor Sunshine Week, an annual inititative designed to facilitate conversation about the importance of transparent government. During the celebration, many news organizations choose to publish content about open government, and our partners host a number of events celebrating and promoting the public's right to know. Visit the Sunshine Week website for more information and free resources.

Youth Journalism
We know many teens get their news from social media, websites and blogs. That’s why it’s so important to inspire teens to read analytically and critically consider the source of their news. For more than a decade, ASNE has led the youth journalism movement by promoting the values of news literacy and excellence in journalism. We host my.hsj.org, the world’s largest online youth journalism network, as well as hsj.org, which provides hundreds of journalism resources to help teachers increase news literacy at their schools. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation funded this initiative. We’ve also trained more than 1900 teachers at the Reynolds High School Journalism Institute, which is held annually at five universities and funded with a grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. To read more about youth journalism, click here.
