The leader of the Pakistan Taliban was killed Friday in a U.S. drone strike in Northwest Pakistan, U.S. and Pakistani officials tell NBC News.
A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the death of Hakimullah Mehsud, head of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), in a CIA drone strike.
A Pakistani security official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, told NBC News earlier that Mehsud was killed earlier in the day in Danday Darpakhel village of North Waziristan.
A senior member of the Pakistani Taliban, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the death.
"It is very painful to announce that our dearest, brave and sincere leader Hakimullah Mehsud died in drone attack," he said.
The U.S. official said he could not confirm other deaths in the attack, but reports in Pakistani news media said a total of four people were killed and five others injured in the strikes, which targeted a compound. The dead reportedly included two other senior TTP officials, Abdullah Bahar Mehsud, Hakimullah Mehsud's new deputy, and commander Tariq Afridi, the TTP commander in Pakistan's Dara Adamkhel region.
A senior Pakistani security official told NBC News that the country was placed on an increased state of alert to pre-empt retaliatory attacks by the Taliban.
The senior Pakistani Taliban member said the TTP held an emergency meeting in the tribal areas soon after learning of Mehsud's death and selected two commanders -- Maulvi Omar Khalid Khurasani, commander in the Mahmand tribal region, and Maulana Fazlullah, head of the Swat Taliban -- as possible replacements for Mehsud, who had a $5 million reward on his head posted by the U.S.
"Among these two men, one will replace our slain emir,” he said.
The TTP has waged a decade-long insurgency against the Pakistani government from sanctuaries along the Afghan border. It has mainly targeted the Pakistani government, in suicide bombings and other attacks, but has on occasion helped the Afghan Taliban in their war against U.S.-led NATO troops in Afghanistan.
The TTP also has claimed claims responsibility for a failed bombing plot in New York City's Times Square in 2010 as well as an attack on Camp Chapman in Afghanistan's Khost province in 2009 that killed seven CIA officials.
Pakistan's new prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, announced after his election in May that he would open unconditional talks with the Taliban and Mehsud's death came as the Pakistani government was preparing to send a peace delegation to talk with the TTP.
Hakimullah Mehsud took over the Pakistani Taliban's leadership in 2009 when his predecessor, Baitullah Mehsud, was killed in a U.S. drone strike.
He came to prominence as a young, brash field commander of the Pakistani Taliban in the mid-2000s, often appearing in propaganda videos.
U.S. officials told NBC News early last month that Mehsud’s second-in-command, Latif Mehsud, had been captured in Afghanistan by U.S. troops.
The Washington Post reported at the time that Latif Mehsud was captured as he traveled with an Afghan government convoy, and that his arrest had infuriated Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
The day after Latif Mehsud’s capture was reported on Oct. 8, Hakimullah Mehsud said in an interview with the BBC that he was open to “serious talks” with the Pakistani government aimed at reaching a peace agreement.
The drone strike was the second since Sharif visited Washington last month and pressed the Obama admistration to halt the attacks, which are seen by most Pakistanis as a violation of the country’s sovereignty.

That's what I've been saying. I can foresee a lot of amendments being made to the ACA over time. A lot of things to iron out and I just don't want to see our leaders being consumed with the damn ACA instead of focusing on more important issues, such as terrorism.

Drone strikes are not enough.
As there too many liabilities and curses on earth in Pakistan, especially Afghan border areas, just carpet bomb some areas as during 1991 attack in Iraq.

In the Gulf War we carpet bombed the desert that had spread out Iraqi troops and armor. Probably zero civilians other than maybe a nomad or two camped out in a tent. That really isn't an option here. I'm fine with the drone strikes as they are about as surgical as you can get.
If we get it down to where the life expectancy of a Taliban leader is about two or three months, pretty soon nobody will want the job. Despite the bad press and the occasional, but relatively rare, collateral fatalities, they are highly effective. We don't have to kill all of them. Most of these people are going to hate us anyway, but there is no point in killing those who don't pose a threat.
At some point to these guys should be figuring out that somebody is ratting them out. It's not like these guys are moving around with a big bright target pasted on their heads. The only way we we are getting positive ID is because we have intel from the ground. That intel could be coming from some in their own ranks or very possibly the civilians on the ground who are sick of being exploited by these guys. We're not just getting these guys by accident, somebody is telling us where they will be and when. We can see a lot with the drones, but we can't detect an individual reliably unless we already know they are supposed to be there.
Cut off the head and ten more grow back. The problem with that... eventuall they don't remember why they even hate America. They will make it a point to always focus their hate on us, and by doing so, we have created a life long enemy. One, that one day might be strong enough to actually cause a real problem for us. Just because for now we can sit behind a screen and point video game drones at their leaders, doesn't mean that in 10 years they won't have even more sophisticated technology that is in the hands of everyone... the world is progressing so quickly, making enemies is the wrong strategy. We are going to learn the hard way.

In his attempts to find the $2.5 Trillion ($4 Trillion) for his ACA in July 2011 President Obama gave his Demand to US Senator Harry Reid for "Across the Board Budget Cuts" to all previously budgeted for Programs (like Medicare, Social Security, Food Stamps, WIC, etc.), Projects (US Infrastructure, etc.), Agencies (Veteran's Affairs, FEMA*, Department of Education, etc.); including cutting the US Citizen's Benefits and Entitlements of the "47%" (2012 49%, 2013 51%).
*Reason FEMA did not have Disaster Relief Funds after 2012 Hurricane Sandy, as previously chopped by President Obama, and had to be reinstated by US Congress.
And the biggest part of the scam, the ignorant still believe that Insurance Corporations equal the Medical Profession (Health Care). Elimination of the Insurance Corporations from the Medical Profession will decrease the costs of Medical Treatments (Health Care) by a minimum of 80%.

The New York City Program:
About the New York City Program, that reduced costs of Medical Treatments by a minimum of 80%. This New York City Program is exactly what Longtime proponent of Health Care Reform, Senator Kennedy, kept attempting; as identical to what President FDR Successfully implemented prior to World War II as the President FDR Universal Health Care for All US Citizens, by eliminating the Insurance Corporations from the Medical Profession. This President FDR Universal Health Care for All US Citizens is the same program that US Congress gets for $50 for Unlimited Medical Treatments (Zero $ Deductables).
President Obama's $2.5 Trillion ACA will eliminate the New York City Program; and get the GREEDY Insurance Corporations back into that New York City Program with the Costs of Medical Treatments going UP by at least 80% actually more when Deductables are included.
The New York City Program was originally created by New York City's Medical Profession battling the Insurance Corporations for those at New York City that could not afford any Health Care, and had to choose between Food, Rent, etc. or Medical Treatments; like the "Working Poor". As previously, when the Insurance Corporations were involved a Patient would pay $100 and get $20 worth of Medical Treatments, the $80 being PROFITS for the Insurance Corporations. The Insurance Corporations were/are "the Death Panels", a bunch of bureaucrats (Not Medical Professionals) that determine which approved Medical Treatments the Medical Professionals are allowed to do from the Insurance Corporations approved Lists. The Insurance Corporations usually approving ONLY the cheapest most adverse side effects (life threatening) Medical Treatments while charging as much as possible to make the most Profits for the Insurance Corporations. Those Medical Professionals that refuse to do as the Insurance Corporations dictate, are subject to increased Medical Malpractice Insurance Premiums (High Risk Category); if the Medical Professional continue to disobey the Insurance Corporations, the Insurance Corporations drop the Medical Professionals from their Medical Malpractice Insurance, those Medical Professionals can no longer Practice Medicine.
It is from the Insurance Corporations Approved Treatment Lists that the Medical Billing Clerks must charge the Costs Listed by the Insurance Corporations for Medical Treatments, like $5.00 for a single asprin.
