New Covenant Patriarchy

"If a man has two wives..." Deut. 21:15

What is God talking about here? Is polygamy Biblical?

If God's Law is a reflection of His holy, perfect character then why do most churches still teach that having more than one wife is wrong?  Is it a sin?  "Well, no," they admit, it is not, but they nevertheless insist that it is wrong to have more than one wife.  So is there another standard of right and wrong from some other god?

These and other tough questions are addressed in this exciting new book by Tom Shipley and the Institute for Christian Patriarchy.

This book, Man and Woman in Biblical Law, lays the foundation for the long-awaited reconstruction of the family in terms of what the Bible teaches.

For the first time in history the doctrine of the family is systematically explained.

Find out the surprising truth of what the Biblie says about marriage.

How could Christianity have swept this issue under the rug for so long?

  1. I do believe in polygyny. And I can't understand why the practice is shunned by most Christians. In the Bible, God said to do away with concubines, not polygyny. A concubine is a sex slave, normally a female that was captured during war battles and forced to be a sex slave by her captors. I know this because I looked up the word concubine in the dictionary. And I have read in the Bible where God condemned having a concubine.

But when it comes to polygyny, nothing in the Bible opposes the practice. The only scripture that can be remotely applied to doing away with polygyny is where Jesus said to obey the law of the land. He wasn't talking about polygyny when he made that statement. And polygyny was not even illegal when Jesus made that statement. Still, anti-polygynist refer to this scripture for evidence that polygyny is wrong.

But is it even illegal? Not if you look at the law of the land. There are about a dozen U.S. States that recognize "Common Law" marriages. And in those states, a Common Law marriage is a legal marriage. But instead of a marriage license, there is a marriage certificate. You've probably seen them located in the front of most family Bibles. They require the signatures of the Bride and Groom, plus two witnesses.

The common law marriage certificate will hold up in any court as valid (in a common law state). But because it is not recorded with any government agency, then no one knows about the marriage unless they are told. Even then the certificate needs to be obtained to show proof of the marriage. This brings to mind another Bible verse, where Jesus said,"Let not the left hand know what the right hand doeth".

If we are legally married with a common law marriage certificate, that only we keep, then how can we be prosecuted for the crime of polygyny?

Gays can legally marry, but a God fearing husband cannot have more than one wife? It makes no sense. People can legally live together and not be married, but can't legally practice polygyny even though the Bible seems to support it.

When I think about the scripture to "follow the law of the land", I also think about the fact that it was once illegal to pray to God. There's a story about that in the Bible as well. And those who violated that law and prayed to God were not condemned but rather redeemed. And that is supporting scripture for doing what is right. And polygyny is right.

  2. Deuteronomy 21 has verses that start:

Deut 21:1 "If one be found slain"

Deut 21:15 "If a man has two wives"

Deut 21:18 "If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son"

Deut 21:21 "And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death"

Is it a good thing to be slain? Or to have a rebellious son? Or to commit a sin worthy of death?

This chapter is dealing with the consequences of sin and unfortunate situations. Tom Shipleys argument collapses before it begins.
