To our Scouts and Scouters,

The Board of Directors of the Connecticut Rivers Council voted Tuesday evening to make the difficult decision to close the summer camp operations at Camp Tadma.  The operations of the camp had been heavily subsidized for a number of years and it was determined the subsidy was unsustainable over the longer term. The funds used to subsidize the camping operations at Tadma limit the council’s ability to support programming for the more than 22,000 youth enrolled in programs across the council.  The direction approved by the Board is to improve the Cub Scout camping options at Camp Mattatuck and J.N. Webster Scout Reservation

The Board also voted to retain at least a portion of Camp Tadma for the continuing use by Scouts in Southeastern Connecticut and will formulate a long term plan of financial stability.

The Board and Council staff are committed to the Cub Scout camping program and will work with those units and individuals that currently use Camp Tadma to find camping solutions that best suit their needs.

Over the past several years, many members of our Scouting family have expressed strong support for Camp Tadma and for that we are grateful. Cub Scout camping is an essential part of the Scouting experience and I would like to stress that Council leadership has taken this matter very seriously and, as always, every decision is based on what is best for the Council and the youth members we serve.

Rest assured, the council’s leadership is committed to providing the strongest possible Scouting program for youth in our area and to building a strong foundation for Scouting’s future.  We feel that this move positions us to deliver on this promise to provide a strong commitment to the future of Scouting.

Yours in Scouting,

Donald Allan, Jr
