Stage 2York / Sheffield

The towns / A sporting view

York

Well before inspiring the final name of the most populated town in the United-States, York developed from a Roman city. Its antique name, Eburacum, actually links it to Evry, another stage city of the 2014 Tour, where the riders will take off one last time, three weeks later. Since that period, York has welcomed the professional cycling pack on several occasions during the Milk Race or the Tour of Britain. The last visit was back in 2009 for a stage conquered by Australian Chris Sutton.

Sheffield

Ninth city of the United Kingdom, Sheffield is for many regarded as the World snooker capital, hosting the World Championships, highlight of the season, since 1927.
But it's not all about rolling on green felt in Sheffield: child of the town, Malcolm Elliott, learned cycling the hard way on the local roads, before capturing three stage wins on the Vuelta a Espana at the end of the eighties. At that time, the British sprinter made a name for himself in most of the cities of the country with a total of 17 stage victories at the Milk Race.

Corporate social responsibility

Since it was founded, Amaury Sport Organisation has been involved in various sponsorship and philanthropy activities. It is the generosity of sport that can be found in a certain number of initiatives aiming to invest in the workings of the disciplines themselves (sponsorship of the French Federation of Cycling), in a humanitarian and social framework, (Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque, Actions Dakar, Un Techo Para Mi Pais) or in the environmental sphere (Madre De Dios, selective sorting, etc.).
