Juventus 2-2 CA Argentinos Juniors (aet; Juventus win 4-2 on penalties)
Juventus became the first European club to win the European/South American Cup since its move to a one-off final in Tokyo thanks to a penalty shoot-out win against CA Argentinos Juniors, who had matched the Italian giants with a 2-2 draw after extra time.
Platini decisive
Both teams were committed to attack throughout, and the outcome was arguably the best Tokyo final yet. Twice the South American side led, through Carlos Ereros on 55 minutes and his strike partner José Antonio Castro after 75, but on each occasion the champions of Italy equalised shortly afterwards, first through a Michel Platini penalty after centre-forward Aldo Serena had been clumsily fouled then, with eight minutes remaining, through Michael Laudrup. The Dane missed his penalty in the ensuing shoot-out but he was the only Juve player to do so and, after goalkeeper Stefano Tacchardi had saved from Sergio Batista and José Luis Pavoni, it was left to Platini to step forward and convert the decisive kick that enabled Juventus to become the first European club to complete a clean sweep of international trophies.
All's well
Platini, who also had a stunning effort disallowed at 1-1, was declared Man of the Match, a decision with which his midfield 'minder' Massimo Bonini concurred. "The choice was fair enough," he said. "I do his running and he sorts out the problems. It's not a bad arrangement." The future UEFA President, meanwhile, was relieved to get the victory, saying: "We were made to suffer but we got it right in the end."
