Paarl off to a flyer

Paarl Boys’ High have made an emphatic start to the season with three consecutive victories.

In their first game they beat touring Argentinean side, San Isidro, 28-5. Although the first half was error-ridden, the hosts were more cohesive in the second and ran in some easy tries. The San Isidro forwards played with venom for the opening 30 minutes, but wilted in the last 30. It was a tough encounter that was played in great spirit.

Boys’ High then met Volkskool in their annual fixture in Rietborn, scoring four tries to win 39-3. The stand-out player for Paarl Boys’ was Craven Week prop and captain Frans Malherbe, who led from the front. The Boys’ High U16A side also had to work hard for a 21-7 victory over the same opposition earlier in the day.

Last Saturday, Paarl Boys’ took part in the Brakenfell Rugby Day in their final pre-season game where they thrashed Bellville Technical High School 40-0. The first half was a scrappy encounter with too many handling errors, but Paarl took the game to Bellville after the break and managed to dominate the set phases. Paarl’s backs looked dangerous with ball in hand and seared through the Bellville backline at will. ‘Boishaai’ flyhalf Gavin Haupfleisch controlled the game well and kicked 10 points to go with his try. He was named Man of the Match. The U14A, U15A and U16A sides all had easy wins over the same opponents.
