Belgacom takes actions related to IT security

This weekend, Belgacom successfully performed an operation in the light of its continuous action plan to protect the security of its customers and their data and to assure the continuity of its services.

Previous security checks by Belgacom experts reveiled traces of a digital intrusion in the company’s  internal IT system. Belgacom has taken all appropriate actions to protect the integrity of its IT system and to further reinforce the prevention against possible incidents.

For Belgacom, the protection of the customers and their data is a key priority. At this stage there is no indication of any impact on the customers or their data. At no point in time has the delivery of our telecommunication services been compromised.

Belgacom strongly condemns the intrusion of which it has become a victim. The company has filed a complaint against an unknown third party and is granting its full support to the investigation that is being performed by the Federal Prosecutor.

Why did you execute this operation?

During a thorough investigation of traces of a digital intrusion, we discovered an unknown virus in a number of units in our internal IT-system. In order to eliminate this virus effectively, we decided to clean up the entire system.

Has the operation been successful?

Indeed, the operation was well prepared and has been executed effectively. We obviously remain vigilant towards the future, and continue to give our full support to the investigation by the Federal Prosecutor.

Has there been any damage for your customers?

No, thus far we have no indication of any impact on our customers or their data. The virus has only been detected in the internal computer system of Belgacom, not in its telecom network.

Have the services to the customers been impacted?

No, at no point in time has the delivery of our telecommunication services been compromised. Neither has the clean-up caused any disturbance to our customers. All their telecom applications and services have continued to function normally.

Are there any consequences for the Belgacom employees?

No, they have only been asked to change their password, and then their workstation is automatically scanned by the system. The virus was detected in a few tens of cases, and each time successfully eliminated.

Do you have any idea about the perpetrators and their motives?

No, we cannot comment on this, it is up to the Federal Prosecutor’s investigation to bring clarity on this.
