Nancy Hodges was named Speaker of the BC Legislature, the first woman to hold the post of Speaker in the British Commonwealth. There were drawbacks to the position, of course. Hodges said regarding her appointment: "I shan't be able to take part in any debates. And I'll doubtless find it hard to restrain myself at times." In 1953, she was appointed to the Senate, where she regained her voice and remained until 1965.
